For Anyone (but especially Anita/Valen/Sanzas)

Locke has been surprised unpleasantly before. Altogether too often. Locke has been confused before, if not very frequently. But this, right now, is probably the most bewildered Locke has ever been. Too many feelings, and they get very confusing very rapidly. He's in his room again, sprawled on his bed, looking concerned and mostly just - well.

He ( Read more... )

Valen wanders in, looking fairly cheerful, an extended wander outside has done him good. The mood falters though as he gets a look at Locke, he can tell something's up. "Locke? Is everything alright?"

"Yes. No. I don't know." A pause, sips some wine, and looks over at Valen with a lopsided expression. "The Sanzas are here."

"Is that good?" He comes forward to sit on the edge of the bed. "Who are the Sanzas?"

"Oh, it's good. It's great. It's - Calo and Galdo." He might have heard those names before. When he was delirious, earlier.

A long pause, he slugs back the rest of the wine glass and sets it down. "They're dead." Flatly. "But they're not."

He may have, but it may not have been in any sort of sensible context if it was while he was delirious. He doesn't say it isn't possible because he knows it is, but what he thinks of isn't likely to be classified as 'great.' "How can they be both dead and not dead?"

This is where it gets weird. He stares fixedly at the ceiling. "Less than a week before I got here, I came home from a trap to find the pair of them lying on the floor with their throats cut ear to ear. I'm pretty sure they were dead."

And a pause. "And now they're not. Apparently. They know they're dead, but they're certainly breathing." He makes a slight noise.

It takes a while for Valen to respond after that bit of information. "How is that possible?" He's hesitant to mention magic, not only because of Locke's feelings on the subject, but only one sorcerer that he's ever heard of has ever managed such a feat. No good comes from that particular method as far as he's concerned.

Locke puts his hands over his face. "I have. No. Motherfucking. Idea."

Because he doesn't know why a Bondsmage would bring the twins back. Unless they weren't the twins. But he's fairly sure they were.

Valen frowns, trying to think of any reasonable explination for why two apparently dead men would be up and walking.

Failing at that, he starts thinking of the unreasonable explinations. "Maybe it's like that time that you were turned into a child again. Maybe they were put back to right before they died and because they're here now, they've stayed alive." It only has the vaguest of ties to reality, he thinks, but it's better than the alternatives.

A blink. "Ow," softly, "that makes my head hurt more than it already does."

Just for sheer weirdness. And yes, it is. This is so weird.

"I'm not even sure I could repeat it and have it come out straight. But as far as possibilities go it isn't a bad one." If it's them, if it's really them, he doesn't know of any sort of magic that would work without them remembering it. Anita's doesn't work that way, Danae magic wouldn't do it...

It's that little shaking again that he had earlier. "Or...they know they're dead. I think. They understood, at least. And -" He clamps his teeth. "I don't know. Maybe I'm dead. Or was. Maybe I died, back in Camorr, on the Floating Grave."

"Or maybe none of you are dead and this place is just that fucked up." He's fairly certain the last part at least is true. "I know I'm not dead, so you can't use being here as a reason to think that."

He shakes his head. And laughs, a little hoarsely, before wincing and remembering. "Fucked up. That's mild. Gods." He flops his head back. "Every time I think I'm settled, something throws me for a loop. I don't like it."

He makes a face. "Gods. Sound like a petulant little brat. 'It's not fair,'" he mock whines, his smile half dry and bitter.

"At least it's something good this time," Valen points out. After all, if someone from one's past is going to mysteriously appear alive when they ought to be dead, at least it's a friend.

.......

His face pales rapidly, because he's had the same thought and followed it through to its conclusion. "Oh shit," Weakly.
