Seriously, whoa, what?

Let us pour a forty on the curb for Steve Irwin. Goddamn.

I try not to make too many of these type of entries, but the Croc Hunter merits it. Death by stingray. Through the heart. I mean. Seriously. Goddamn.

Huh. You know, the only people I've done death entries for were the Pope and Steve Irwin. I'm sure that says something about... something.

I could never imagine him living to be an old man, but I never expected him to die this soon, either...

At least he died doing what he loved.

Yeah, I kinda thought he'd be dead a long time ago, given what he did. But still. It's so bloody random. I mean, stingray to the chest, what?

At least he died doing what he loved.

Truer words never spoken.

Ah hah hah... I feel a little better knowing that I wasn't the only one who made a small post on him.

I'm crushed, man. I loved that insane croc dude. This was so sudden.

I know! I mean, he was kind of a charicature of himself, but he always seemed to be having so much fun that I could never fault him. He genuinely seemed to enjoy life and what he did with it.

He died before he could make his kid stingray-savvy. A true tragedy.

I feel genuinely bad about it. It just seems like a really random occurance and some awful luck.

It's at the same time really tragic and strangely appropriate, you think "Well, he almost had it coming, always handling dangerous animals so recklessly", but it's not like he didn't know what he was doing. It sucks, that kind of a freak accident. It seems they aren't even that poisonous.
I bet he could've come up with a dozen better ways to get done in. And 44's too damn young.

Mm. Well, I don't think many deaths can be said to be "appropriate" but I think I understand what you're trying to say, and yeah, 44 was too young. Poor guy.

I have to agree with the above comments about half-expecting him not to live too long doing what he did... but I don't think I honestly believed it would happen.

I'm strangely crushed even though I never watched his program much at all. I think I'll just miss his eccentric ways. He was certainly a unique television personality.

Yeah, I sort of expected him to be handling snakes and crocodiles well into his nineties. It just-- it doesn't compute.

Yeah. He did a lot of good work for other things, and he never seemed to mind if people laughed at him. Hell, he laughed at himself and had a good time. I admire that.

Yeah, we were all in the clubroom at uni today and someone turns around and goes "...I just heard in IRC, Steve Irwin's dead" and we all went "what, what, you're kidding" until three different people brought up official news sites and showed us real articles. It was kind of crazy.

What's kind of crazier is that more of my American friends have posted about this than my Australian friends, although I suppose that could be because when the news came out you guys were settling down for bed and we were all busy at work/school/what have you. But I think he was a bigger hit overseas then he was here.

Anyway, he did heaps for conservation and the environment and such, and I feel so sorry for his poor wife and children. :/

I think it had to do with the time thing, because news of it got out right around when, yeah, a lot of us were hitting lj for the last time before bed. Besides, we wouldn't have gotten it on the television, really, it's mostly an online thing. And we all liked him. He was sort of a... you know how all countries have stereotypes? The rude French, the warmongering Americans, the laidback Jamaicans, etc.? He sort of took the typical Australian stereptype (dude who wrestles bizarre and possibly dangeous animals) and owned it. He made it work for him.

Plus, you know, all the environmental awareness he did. So, yeah, it just seems really sad.
