Snow White and the Huntsman - review (SPOILERS)

Jun 10, 2012 00:28

So I saw Snow White and the Huntsman today with one of my genealogy friends. I (mostly) enjoyed it. I have been reading reviews which make it seem like the Queen doesn't get a lot of screen time. I find that really interesting because to me it seemed to be the Queen's story rather than Snow White's. I mean, they didn't really give Kristen Stewart a lot of lines until the last 25 minutes of the movie, even if the camera was on her.

I enjoyed the sorcery and magic parts of the story; I thought it gave a different dimension to the Queen's hatred for Snow White. And I liked the addition of the Queen's craving for young, pretty women.  I thoroughly am enjoying the soundtrack, which I bought as soon as I came home and has Florence + the Machine on it. The addition of William to the hunters with the Queen's brother in order to find Snow White was interesting as well. Once I got used to them, the fairies were cool. Sanctuary and White Hart - very cool.  COSTUMES - SPOT ON. Loved them. I liked the troll too. Also the idea that Snow White is a pure soul that can calm creatures - any type of creature.

What I didn't like? Snow White/Joan d'Arc screaming her "war speech" and her in mail. The (to me) abrupt recitation of the Lord's Prayer while Snow White is in the tower when there is no other mention of "current," "real," or "organized" religion mentioned in the story. No explanation of what the kiss was supposed to mean (even though we all assume it is true love's kiss? then why from the huntsman?). The plodding through the dark forest FOREVER.

Because I like the soundtrack so much, I will probably end up buying this eventually, at least on DVD if not BluRay.

It is interesting to see all these different versions of the Snow White story coming to fruition in the past year.
