The Nucleus 5 is advertised as being the most water resistant sound processors on the market, and Cochlear shows pictures on their website with the processors with water being splashed on them. Part of my wanting to upgrade was to have fewer issues with water. Though the Freedom were quite reliable in that regard, I never wore them while in water, and religiously put them in the dehumidifier every night. Looking around the Cochlear website more this morning, I do see warnings to not wear while swimming. *sigh* Can you guess what's coming next?
We went to the Yuba River over the weekend for a couple days of sun and water. I wore the new processors for several hours on the first day while we were in the river. It was a wonderful experience being able to converse with friends while in and out of the water. My processors didn't have as good of a time. Soon after leaving the water, one went completely bonkers switching programs on its own, and then shutting down. The other processor would only work sporadically. I spent the rest of the weekend lipreading and signing.
Today, it was back to reality, and I called in to Cochlear customer service. I was gently advised that the processors shouldn't be worn while in the water. Hmph. Needless to say, I'm anxious to get the replacements, and I won't be wearing them again during water sports.
