Bad case of loving you

Part II

The moment Ali walked into the garden she was immediately swept off her feet by yet another tall and super muscular guy who picked her up and unceremoniously began to spin around with her in his arms. It was the first time in the entire time since Ali’s mother’s death that Robert heard her laugh. It was one of the most beautiful sounds he had ever heard.
“Damn it, Sebastian would you please put me down?” She asked still laughing.
The guy spun one more time and then he stopped when he actually saw Chase for the very first time.
“Alex? What’s going on here?” He asked as he gingerly put her down.

“Sebastian, meet Dr. Robert Chase. He’s my friend from Princeton, who sort of invited himself along for the ride. Chase, this is Sebastian, one of Casper’s friends from high school.” Ali explained and walked off to the side to allow the men to greet each other properly.
She saw the silent gathering of strength the two of them had exchanged in the way they looked at each other. She knew exactly what it meant. Sebastian was telling Robert that he deeply cares about her and that if he’d ever even unintentionally tried to or actually hurt her; he’d suffer the consequences.
“Okay, that’s enough. I’m going to get myself something to drink and I am going to take Robert with me so that you two can start speculating about the real nature of our friendship.” Ali said. “C’mon Chase.” She once again reached for Robert’s hand and led him inside.
“Did you see how Casper’s friend looked at me? What was that about?” Chase asked her when they were out of the earshot and sight of the others.

“Don’t take it personally. He was just trying to assert the point of his role in my life. He wanted to make sure that you knew that if you ever hurt me, you’ll pay.” She replied before taking two bottles of Carlsberg out of the fridge.

“Do you really think that they are talking about us?”

“Yeah, they probably wonder how long you have been doing me…” She giggled and watched the Australian’s jaw hit the floor. “Aww, come on Robert. You know that that they are talking about it.”

“But I am not as you put it ‘doing you’…” The Aussie said.

“We know that. They don’t.” She replied handing him an opened bottle.
Their fingers brushed against each other creating a strange spark of energy that made Ali take a step back.
“So, what are we going to tell them?” Robert asked casually after he recovered.

“Nothing.” She replied.

“But…”

“There are no buts in here little wombat. I love my brother dearly, but it’s my life and I am going to live it by my rules.” She replied taking a long swig from her own bottle. “Let’s go get the interrogation started…” She muttered under her breath.
They walked out of the kitchen, back through the office/spare bedroom and back into the yard. As they were approaching the table the four people sitting at it grew remarkably quiet.
“Told you so…” She whispered into Aussie’s ear and then sat down.

“So, Robert… Can I call you Robert?” Sebastian asked finally.

“Um, sure…” Robert replied.

“How did you meet Alexandra?”

“In a hospital where I work, it was a couple of months before her mother passed away.” The doctor shrugged.

“Isn’t it unethical to hang out with your patient’s family?” Sebastian shot back

“And we’re off…” Ali said to no one in particular.

“Um, no. Ali was spending days in her mother’s room. It would be weird if we didn’t at least acknowledge each other’s presence. So, yeah we did hung out together. But nobody seemed to mind. Or maybe they chose not to mind. We stayed in contact while she was living in New York.” Chase explained.

“We met again about a year and a half ago back at the hospital where I came to use the library for my Clinical Psychology class and the rest is history.” Ali interrupted him in midsentence. “That’s also how I met Allison, the woman with whom I live right now. “
The conversation was interrupted by the arrival of an insane amount off food.
“Finally, some food that I can actually digest.” Ali sighed with content as a waiter put a plate piled with French fries and the biggest double bacon cheeseburger Chase has ever seen. In fact he actually winced, before smiling to her.

“It’s hard to believe that you have been living with a vegetarian for almost year.” He said.

“The term starving college student suddenly makes sense, doesn’t it?” She replied before biting a large chunk of the sandwich.
For a time he just watched her eat in astonishment. He wondered how come a girl this thin, could eat this much and it didn’t show. She had to have some sort of furnace inside. And apparently it wasn’t a food exclusive furnace. She attacked knowledge with the same kind of ferocity, which he suspected would make her mother proud.
After the food was gone they all cleared the table and made their way inside of the house before the mosquitoes began their daily ritual siege of Tommy’s backyard.
“I’m going to make coffee. You guys need anything?” Monica asked.

“More beer?” Casper said and both women looked at each other.

“How old is your brother again?” Monica asked Ali.

“Was that a rhetorical question?” Ali replied but opened the fridge and fished out three remaining bottles of Carlsberg. “What about you Chase?”

“Coffee actually sounds nice. Thanks.” The Aussie smiled. His accent was thicker than usually.
The Neanderthals filed out of the room armed with their beer and some chips. Ali actually heard Sebastian muttering the word sissy as he walked past Chase.
“Don’t worry about that. Your arrival sort of took everybody by surprise…” Monica said. “They’ll get used to you. It’s just that after that whole Max thing, they became sort of overprotective of Alex.” She busied herself with setting the coffee maker.

“Oh?” Chase asked. He plopped down on one of the chairs by the table. He looked at Ali but she was looking away outside the window with unseeing eyes. He stood up approached her and wrapped an arm around her.
At that point Monica had finally conquered the petulant coffee maker and decided to make a quiet exit into the sunken living room.
“Where’s Alex?” Casper asked when she showed up.

“She and Robert are having a moment.” She replied plopping down on the couch next to him. He stood up. “No, don’t go. I think that they need it. She needs it.”

“But…” The older Novak said.

“Just leave them. He needs to know what he’s gotten himself into by coming here. I’m sure that they’ll join us once they are ready.” His other half replied. Casper sighed and then he flopped back onto the sofa.

***
Ali Novak and Dr. Robert Chase stood together in the tiny kitchen of her brother’s best friend’s house and she let him hold her. Just like that night on Cameron’s couch.
“He’s my House.” She finally spoke. Her voice seemed strangely detached.

“What?” Robert asked.

“Max Prusky. The boy I came back for. He’s like my own, personal Gregory House. However, that’s where the similarities between Cameron and me end. She learned how to live with her unrequited feelings for House, but I can’t do that. I don’t want to do that. I want to be able to move on. I deserve it.” She clarified with clinical precision.

“I see,” said Robert. It was really the only thing he could say under the circumstances.
She slid out of his embrace. She walked to the nearest cabinet and took out a large mug. Then she made a beeline to the coffee maker and returned to him with a full mug.
“I’m sorry…” She said handing it to him.

“For what? There’s nothing you should be sorry about.” Chase interrupted her in midsentence.

“Springing it all up on you like that. Making an already uncomfortable situation even more difficult…” She explained.

“It’s okay. Really. I’m used to that. Besides, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want to be here. Come on; let’s go see your brother. They have been really quiet there for some time.” He smiled taking her hand in his. The gesture was becoming more and more natural.
When they walked into the room they realized that the only unoccupied space in the room was one of the two armchairs in the sunken living room.
They walked up to it and after Chase put down his mug on the nearby windowsill he sat down and then unceremoniously put Ali sideways on his lap. All three guys looked as if they were going to get heart attacks right then and there.
“Casper, dear is everything all right?” She asked as the wombat wrapped an arm around her.

“I don’t know. Why don’t you two tell me?” Casper replied clearing his throat.

“Yeah, we’re okay.” His sister replied snuggling closer to Robert’s chest and resting her head on his shoulder.
Then she yawned, closed her eyes and fell disgustingly hard asleep.
