Bad case of loving you
Part I
Newark International Airport, Newark, NJ
Two weeks later,
“Allison, could you please stop pacing like that? You’re making me nervous.”
Ali Novak asked her equally tense roommate / dr. Chase’s coworker Dr. Allison Cameron as the latter one walked up and down the aisle in the waiting area of the Departures area of the airport fort Ali’s flight to begin boarding on a Friday evening, two weeks after her impromptu visit to the Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital’s rooftop.
Those weeks were probably the craziest time in Ali life, save the time after her mother’s funeral. She wrapped up her sophomore year at Princeton University, spent hours on the phone with her brother going through even the most miniscule details of her journey and then she usually called Chase to relay to him what they came up with. Somehow, through all this time they managed to keep this a secret from both Allison and Eric, the other male “duckling” in the group, even though House was on in on their plans almost from the time Ali first got the idea.
She knew that Allison was going to be more than surprised, and couldn’t wait to see the other woman’s reaction when the Aussie would finally show up. However, when the doctor did make an appearance, she was the one that had to do a second take. Because, Chase whom she remembered seeing either in scrubs while he was a resident, or immaculate suits and lab coat he wore while working for House, looked even better once he got out of them.
This is going to be hell. She thought as she stood up and let herself be embraced by him.
“Hey there, little wombat. You are almost on time.” She smiled as they separated.
“I know, sorry about that. You didn’t thought that I wouldn’t show up, did you?” He replied and then turned to Cameron, who’s jaw hung loosely somewhere along her knees.
“What are you doing here?” She asked when she was able to pick it up.
“Ali, didn’t tell you? I’m going with her.” Chase replied.
“You’re what?”
“I said I am going with her. Don’t worry House knows about everything. He actually thought that it was a good idea, believe it or not.” Chase replied.
“But…” Allison shot an accusing look at their young friend.
“I would have told you sooner, but you were too obsessed on blowing your money away while making sure that I wouldn’t go home looking like the starving college student that I am. Going along with me was entirely the wombat’s idea. And let me tell you something, I never thought that wombats can be strangely, impressively strong willed sometimes.” Ali said in her defense, just as the boarding call they were waiting for was sounded off over the loud speaker.
“I think it’s time for us to go. Please tell House when you see him that I will call as soon as I’ll know more about the case. And I will call you from Casper’s as soon as my jet lag wears off.” She added.
“Chase could you do something for me?” Allison turned to her coworker as they walked to the proper gate.
“Of course, what is it?” the Aussie asked.
“Take care of her. I know that she’s an adult and everything, but…” She trailed off.
“Don’t worry. That’s one of the reasons that I decided to go with her in the first place.” The man smiled to her.
“If something happens I’ll call you or House, or Wilson…”
“C’mon Chase, pardon the pun, but I really don’t want to chase that plane around the runway especially if it has our names written on two seats. So, could you please get a move on you’ll have enough time to flirt with each other… Oh, I almost forgot. I left Walker a message back at the ranch but if he called you, tell him where I am, okay?” She asked before dragging her wombat away. Cameron couldn’t really do much but watch her and smile.

Eight hours, two crappy movies, and a ton of equally lousy airplane food later, the starving Princeton Junior and her blonde and über-handsome, wombat were about to walk out from the Customs area of the Warsaw’s airport out into the Arrivals terminal. As she looked at Chase, she saw something that looked remarkably like… fear in Robert’s clear, iridescent blue eyes.
“Nervous?” She asked as they took care of their luggage.
“Bloody terrified…” He admitted.
“Don’t worry. My brother knows that you’re coming along. I think that he’s actually looking forward to meeting you in person.” She said as her left hand, which seemed to have a mind of its own gently touched his right.
He looked at her surprised, but when she tried to move her hand away, he instead took it and pressed it to his own hand palm to palm before threading their fingers together.
“Come, on. Let’s do this thing.” He smiled to her and they walked out into the Arrival terminal, unaware of the curious looks people send towards them.
The moment they stepped out. Ali tore out her hand from his only to run across the hall and moments later she saw her hug a guy who was about his age and who looked remarkably like Ali, but male, taller and a lot more muscular. Even their hair was almost the same length. He swallowed hard when both of them walked back to him.
“Casper this is Dr. Robert Chase. The one I told you about. Chase, meet my older brother Casper.” Ali said and then walked off to the side and watched them greet each other.
“You’re the guy that took care of our mother, before her… I thought that you’d be a lot older.” Casper said with sheer amazement in his eyes.
“I am the resident intensivity specialist at PPTH. So, basically I just did my job.” Chase replied.
“Yeah, those days are way behind us now. Chase only looks like good boy now. Can we please go home now? I am starving.” Ali interrupted the Aussie in midsentence.
“But, we ate like five hours ago.” Chase said as they made their way out of the airport and into the car park.
“Chase that was airplane food. I ate it only because you told me to. I want to eat some real food now.” Ali grinned to him.
“That’s good. Because when I talked to Tommy a few days ago it accidentally slipped out that you’re flying in. He’s planned a little gathering at the Inn.” Casper said.
“Oh, great I just got off a plane and I already I have to deal with you and your Neanderthal friends…” Ali rolled her eyes.
“Alex, sweetheart you adore my Neanderthal friends. And the feeling is very mutual. And besides, they haven’t seen you for almost five years.” Casper replied loading up their luggage and Chase’s doctor’s bag into the trunk of his bottle green Opel Astra.
“You forgot that I work for House.I’ve seen my share of bizarre.” Chase said with a twinkle in his big, blue eyes.
He held the car’s front passenger car open for her but she climbed into the backseat instead and was followed by her brother who climbed behind.
“Hey wombat, are you going to just stand there like that all day? We do have people waiting for us you know.” She called out as she buckled up her seatbelt. Robert scowled at her, but then he quickly got into the car.
Casper started the car and minutes later they were on their way out of Warsaw. For the first part they were all quiet, because Casper seemed to be really concentrated on the road, but when they left the city behind, he spoke.
“So, what’s with this entire wombat business? Is there something that I should know, but you conveniently forgotten to tell me until now?” Chase sent her a stern look through the car’s side view mirror.
“It’s related to Chase’s work. His boss has a peculiar sense of humor. Since Robert is Australian, House just loves to make fun of that…”
As the next few hours went by Ali recounted for Casper some things about Chase and his work. She has warned him during their marathon phone calls that Aussie didn’t really liked to talk about himself or his family, so he complied to her wished and didn’t started that particularly touchy subject.
However, as they talked, he continued to observe his Little Sister with the corner of his eye and saw something that stirred him a little. At some point during the journey his sister leaned to the front and put her chin on the young doctor’s shoulder and the unusually focused Aussie seemed not to notice. But Casper did. Something was going on between the two and as weird as it was, he was happy because his sister looked happier than ever and if it was the doctor’s influence, he hoped that the wombat would continue doing whatever it was that he was doing.
“Okay guys, we’re here.” He said as the car made a right turn into a more narrow side road.
After they got out of the forest the car climbed up a steep hill before coming to a stop in front of a gate that led to a small building which looked like a cross between a restaurant and a single family home. The guys got out of the car, and Chase, being the good boy that he was opened the door for her and reached out his hand, which as Casper noted again Natalie didn’t let go of once she got out of the car.
“Be careful, they can sense fear.” She giggled as she led Chase by the hand as if it was the most natural thing to do.
As they approached the gate in the gate leading to the backyard, or more accurately the side yard, it had become apparent that the so-called gathering was really a giant party and Chase looked more than a little surprised.
“Welcome to my life.” Ali whispered into his ear before crossing the threshold.
All he could do was to follow her.
