Twenty years ago today something happened, that my parents and many others thought never to be possible. It was one of the greatest moments in our history and the one with the biggest impact on my generation.

We have to thank the courageous people who got on the street every Monday, the people whose wish to make a difference made the GDR brittle from the inside so that the winds of change could finish what they had started.

I thank the universe for giving the right people the right ideas and right words at the right time.

I thank everyone involved for clearing the way for our Unity and for all the good things it has brought us.

Now I wish the narrow-minded people of the world would understand that we are not the generation of our grandparents. We know that Nov. 9th 1938 has also been the day when the organized persecution of Jews began. It is one of the darkest moments in our history.

We won't forget.
We do not need to be reminded every time someone fears "the germans are getting stronger".
We are different people in a different time. In a time where freedom was achieved without one shot being fired. We are Germans and not Nazis.

Now I wish, we would learn to respect and savour our servicemen- and women, who risk their lifes and welfare in international deployments such as KFOR, ISAF, UNIFIL or Operation Atalanta.

We have the possibility to change things. And even if the methods are discussable, we are - thanks to those who made the wall brittle - a strong nation and should take responsibility. And stand up for it.
But most important: We Germans should be able honour those in service for our country and the international community without some 'Gutmensch' making us feel guilty for supporting our troops. It does not turn us into Nazis.

I wish, we Germans would accept ourselves as a wonderful nation with a lot of prospects that stands to its dark past but dedicates the future to peace and prosperity.

Yes, we are!
Yes, we can!
