Last night, I had the experience of my life. No, not sex (you dirty minded fools you). I went to the Greek Theater in Berkeley last night and witnessed the greatest musical event of my young life. That's right friends and neighbors: I saw THE FLAMING LIPS AND WEEN! LIVE! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Actually, the opening band was The Liars, an indie band from L.A. They sucked bat balls. Continuously tried to do contemporary stuff and just ended up sounded like dying animals. They had 2 drummers who just banged around and a guitarist who treated the instrument as if he had never seen one before. Loud and bad. But, then again, the show had nowhere else to go but up.
Ween was such a freakin' awesome band live that I was close to wetting my pants. They played virtually everything, cussed often, drank a lot and rocked it hard. If you haven't heard Ween, do so now. "The Mollusk" is a good place to start, their 1997 album. But some great individual songs are "Buenos Tardes, Amigo", "Ocean Man", "Buckingham Green", and "Waving My Dick In The Wind." They made ample use of the fog machine and lights, but kept everything else pretty simple. I was so freakin' pumped that if the show had stopped there, I would have been ok. But it wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
I think it is very safe to say that The Flaming Lips are one of the greatest live bands of all time. They used a space bubble to roll around over the crowd. They had 10 aliens, 10 Santas, Superman, the Flash and Captain America on stage with them. Strobe lights and smoke machines, a fish-eye camera on the lead singer's mike, and a video screen showing crazy videos during all the songs. If you've heard the Flaming Lips, you will understand the sheer power they have on an album. Imagine that intensity magnified three fold. It was the greatest. I seriously didn't want it to be over.
Other Random Notes: Camp Putah is going great (remember, if you come visit me on skit nights, you get Thor points!). I saw "The Godfather" for the first time, and I saw "Monster House" tonight. "The Godfather" was really good. Extremely good. And "Monster House" was better than expected.
