I'd been waiting for this day for almost two years. The chance to see MCR live in Liverpool was not to be missed. That's MCR. In Liverpool. NOT MANCHESTER, BUT LIVERPOOL.
I managed to leave work early enough to get down there for 7:15pm. I thought about how I'd be on my own for the entire night, as with the doors opening at 7pm, there was no chance that I'd be at the front, or with anyone I knew. Luckily, the doors were still closed at 7:20pm. Unluckily, the line stretched at least 1/2 a mile down the road. I plodded down the line towards the end, when Sean Mc called out. Greeted by the man himself, Leanne, and "I-think-his-name-was-Sean-too...", we all awaited to entrance to the gig of a lifetime.
Finally getting indoors from the cold just after 8:10pm, we all went for a pre-gig drink whilst the support act played. They sounded heavy, really death metal stylee. We viewed their last two songs, and the general concession was a decent "Not Bad". 6/10 (for the two songs)
Random crowd shots are a favourite of mine
With Sean leading the way, we made our way to the middle left area of the academy, in the hope that everyone at the front would:
a) go for a drink
b) vacate the space at the front
Unfortunately, this did not happen, and we made do of our good position, until the pushy bastards from all around tried to fashion in on our area. Pictures were taken of the intrpid four via Leanne's camera, and the critically acclaimed Blown up Rubber Jonny made a brief appearance, as people forced it overhead with their hands.
I watched as the giant curtain was put up, knowing full well that within 20 minutes, the best gig of my life would begin. And it did not disappoint.
Having witnessed a sneak peak at what MCR do now at their gigs, I knew what was instore. "The End" began to play, to overexuberant emos and rapturous applause from the entire crowd. The curtain was drawn apart, and MCR were positioned behind it, in full swing of "The End". "Dead!" was greeted with the first real moshing of the night, closely entailed by "This Is How I Disappear", in which I viewed the first early signs of a mosh pit to our left. The set-list ran as follows:
The End
Dead!
This Is How I Disappear
I'm Not Okay (I Promise)
Thank You For The Venom
Mama
Cemetary Drive
Welcome To The Black Parade
I Don't Love You
Teenagers
Give 'Em Hell, Kid
House Of Wolves
You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison
Famous Last Words
Cancer
Helena
The biggest sing-a-longs were witnessed during "WTTBP", "Teenagers", "I'm not Okay", "Cancer" and "Helena". I took about 30 pictures, 7 of which weren't good quality, but the others were decent enough...
THE logo. Obviously.
Frank and Bob get jiggy with it during "Dead!"
Gerard had a tamborine. Not to be confused with tangerine.
I didn't think I got any good ones of Frank....
Best picture I took. Once I realised I could zoom in further. Damnit.
Towards the end of the gig, a girl threw a pom-pom onto the stage, to which Gerard said "Gimme that! Oh yeah, I've been waiting for one of these ALL FUCKING NIGHT!" Obviously met by widespread cheering from the 1900 packed into the academy.
MCR finished with "Helena", and the lights went up. Damaged, sweaty, shattered fans stood around, blinking rapidly to adjust to the light and trying to get their bearings. Heading to the exits, "Blood" came on on the intercom system, which led half the exiting crowd to turn around to sing a long too, also hoping that MCR would make a veru brief appearance back on stage. We headed outside, where I bought a t-shirt to commemorate the night. Sean and... I really wish I could remember the other guy's name" Anywhoo, they left, and I shortly parted company with Leanne to get a life home. I noticed about 70 fans waiting outside the band's exit, so I wandered over to have a peak. Sure enough, they were waiting for the band to sign stuff and get photos, so I hung around as long as I could, before my dad rang me to see where I was. Reluctantly, I had to leave. Apparently only Gerard went out for a few photos and to sign some merch.
I arrived home with a damaged left foot, crazy hair, hardly any energy left in me and ringing in my ears. But I didn't care. It was worth every penny. I always demanded that MCR were only my emo band for when I felt crappy. After this, I think they've toppled the Chilis as my favourite band. For now. BEST FUCKING NIGHT OF MY LIFE. 11/10.
