Bittangabee Bay/Ben Boyd National Forest, New South Wales, Australia

Just south of Eden in New South Wales lies a sensational rugged and remote stretch of coastline within the Ben Boyd National Forest. As we sought refuge for the night looking for a good camping spot in the dark, we found ourselves travelling down a bumpy two-track off the Princes highway that might questionably was designed for a four-wheel drive, but we managed to get down in a small economic car while haunting each other about the Ben Boyd Beast. Nestled in these woods was the Bittangabee Bay camping grounds overlooking the Bay. this is also the only safe haven between Twofold Bay, Eden, and the Mallacoota Inlet so is a popular docking spot for the evening with boaters. First inhabited by the indigenous Thaua/Thawa people of the Yuin Nation for 6,000 years, the area became significant for European settlers as “Pertangerbee” by 1844. The indigenous used it as a teaching grounds as “Bundooro” to teach young men “secret business” and across the bay was the resting place for the Rainbow Serpent so part of their mythology. Europeans settled the area with stone structures as early as 1844. At this camping grounds, is a derelict stone storehouse down from the Green Cape lighthouse (1881) where the building materials for the lighthouse was processed. A wooden jetty was also built with a 7 kilometer long wooden tramway to connect the two. We found the camping area to be spectacular, friendly, comfortable, and laden full of wildlife with viewings of wallabees, kangaroo, oppossum, and wombats. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.
