Roses
by Thomas Dekker
3/5/06

I awaken to the sunlight as it filters through the window
Reflected off of the corn fields behind this house
That we made love in
Wrecking this fragile bed frame

And you whisper good morning my dear
And with each breath
I know you're in the garden picking rosebuds
From your heart and sending them to me

And the notion of this motion
Fills my soul with gratitude
That someone like you could love me
That is the cream in my coffee

But be careful to remove all the thorns
Did you forget?
Oh, I'm sorry that these tears are flowing
But your mistake has made me bleed

For I held them oh so tight
And now you say
Oh, you're being dramatic, over-reacting
Isn't my love enough?

And I answer by removing all the thorns
And you press the petals on my wounds
Saying it's OK
It'll always be this way

And the roses that you picked for me at the start
Are not red no more, they are black
But it's alright
'Cause black is my favorite color
