new horizons in music appreciation

The Church of the Holy Name in West Roxbury is a venue I've performed in, a very big nave with decent acoustics. The pipe organ isn't the best in the world, or even the city of Boston, but one could be generous in pointing out that the space is half the instrument.

Rock Band is a video game, the designers of which employ several friends of mine. I've had discussions with some of them about what games might or might not be developed in the future. We've joked about "Organ Hero," or, less ironically, some form of conducting game.

Anyone see where I'm going with this? Not so much the pipe organ-although player organs existed right alongside player pianos back in the day-as it turns out. The point of this post is: apparently, someone is not only experimenting with the expressive possibilities of digital music-about which I'm leery on certain levels-but is conducting a(n unfortunately unfree) concert using a Wii remote at Holy Name this week.

Does this promise to be a glimpse of (part of) the future of video-gaming and/or musical performance? Or would you consider it another sign of the impending doom-or, more realistically, innate silliness-of human culture?
