Bullet and Sisters: In which we remember how great this Bones Cast is

Howdy!

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of doing these recaps every two eps versus one. This is more because Bones has deviated slightly and taken a more serial approach to the show this time out, making each episode build on the next in one way or another. So taking in two episodes at a time gives us a little more accurate perspective because we have more of the story to work with in interpretation.

So let's start with "The Bullet in the Brain." Wow. I mean. WOW!  Judas is my all-time favorite Bones episode but this one rocketed past a whole lot of other good candidates to land a spot in my top 5 (don't ask me where, Bones episodes are like children and I don't do well ranking them). I think every time Heather Taffet comes on screen she gets creepier. I wasn't the biggest fan of her in Hold, but if she hadn't already won me over in Boy she definitely would now. She's not even on past the credits but manages to mess with Sweets' mind for almost the rest of the episode. Do you think he deleted his recording of her or not?

Taffet wasn't the other great guest star on, though. We had Caroline there too to shove things along and keep everyone on track just like she always does. I always waffle back and forth as to whether or not I'd like her as a regular. There's something to be said about the pizazz she brings to the whole Bones world, but at the same time would it be as special if she were on all of the time? I really don't know, but I do know I've loved seeing her on as a semi-regular this year and I don't think there are any of her 22 Bones episodes I wouldn't rewatch in a heartbeat. The scene with her talking to Sweets was awesome! Do you think she's telling him the truth? I kinda hope so just because it was so honest but the way Patty Belcher switched gears just like that still amazes me!!

But wait! There's more! Max swings back into town too, debunking all of the fanfics that still have him working at the Jeffersonian. I tweeted Carla Kettner about that and she replied that Max is a wandering soul. I like that picture even if it does make me just a little sad for Brennan. Still, Max shows up when it counts and that the writers gave the last scene to he and Brennan made my heart skip. I'm a sucker for excellent Daddy-Daughter moments. Can't wait for the next time he comes!

The meat of Bullet, though, is the sniper story. I'm still hiding in my spoiler-free cave because the sky isn't falling here every other day and because I've come to really like it and the people I've met who are here with me [though does PJ really have to elbow me in the ribs so often?]. With that said I find I'm very intrigued by this new turn of events. 1st, I may just pitch in with Hodgins and buy the guy a gift basket and if I was the twins' dad I probably would've paid him too (wasn't that tie back to Aliens awesome?!?!?!?). But beyond that, I'm a little confused. from the convo Booth and Broadsky had before Booth vaulted onto his own property(ps, that camera reminded me of the same camera that was in Hero right before the grave they were at got blown to kingdom come) It sounds like Broadsky COULD have pulled off the shot but DIDN'T. But he knows who did. It even sounded like he warned the prostitute that she was in danger and she ignored him.

And what's between Booth and Broadsky? I'm with pal PJ in thinking Booth knew Broadsky was involved the moment he saw what kind of bullet was in that wall, but what's their history? Friends? Enemies? Frienemies? The first guy Booth hauls in from his buddy list knows that Booth knows what's going on too. I want to see more of that: more interaction with the guys Booth has served with and maybe a clearer picture as to what his Army days were like. That, to me, is the beauty of this arc. For as much as I love Brennan the show is named after her and we know a lot of her past. Booth? Not so much and he's quite tight-lipped about everything so that will make for a great dynamic too. I really want to hear your thoughts as to whether or not you think Broadsky is one of the good guys or the bad guys!

Shallow moment: the sheer hotness of Seeley J Booth running through the woods is beautiful and needed more often, though next time when Booth knows he's going after someone he should wear jeans (leather jacket, maybe?) and better running shoes. Gotta say I love Brennan chewing him out at the diner for going it alone! Now that look at the end? What was that all about?

Here's where I think the perspective thing comes into play. The episode before this is Bag, in which Booth kinda throws in his lot with Hannah as far as letting Hannah in on the fact that Brennan has a thing for Booth (did he ever tell Hannah that he had loved Brennan? I know he assured Hannah he was all into her but did Booth's feelings of love come out?). The episode after Bullet is Sisters, in which Booth's tune to Brennan is you can love more than one woman, but you can only love one woman the most(we'll come back to this).

It seems to me that when he looks out and sees Brennan with that little girl smile on her face and the conch shell up to her ear Booth sees that she's happy. And he likes that. I don't want to get too introspective here but I have to wonder if something doesn't change inside of him once again toward her now that he knows the truth of how she feels and the realization that she can still be happy even though he had to rebuff her romantically. Time will tell, I suppose, but even from the very beginning of the next episode we see Booth more at ease with Brennan than he's been all season.

Snipers must excel at compartmentalization to do well. Since Booth came back it seems like he's been trying to compartmentalize everything surrounding Brennan and his relationship with her. This, I believe, is why we see him being rude or short with her. Not because he has changed necessarily, but because he's guarding his heart against further damage and is trying not to get too close to her again; especially once Hannah shows up. Bullet seemed to mark the end of that era for him.  In Sisters he isn't rude, but rather teases Brennan and laughs with her again (awkward, party of two, but good). I always remind myself they were apart for 7 months. It takes time to get back in the groove again after so long, but I think they have.

And so we come to Sisters, which I was prepared to dislike if it was too goofy, but enjoyed. The best thing 100 and Photo have done for the series is put B&B's love out there so that it's fair game for discussion now. Oh sure, they still talk about it under the pretext of their cases, but it's there and they both know what they mean. I also loved this episode and Bullet because they are ensemble pieces. For as much as Bones is about B&B it would be nothing without the cast. Bullet had some great team moments and Sisters was all about Cam- whom I love! I get that in order to flesh out Hannah's character more this season with haven't seen nearly as much Cam or some of the others, but I'm really hoping now that Hannah's on her way out the writing will shift back to this older, more comfortable-feeling format.

People have commented over the last two episodes especially that Bones is "back" and I think what they mean by that is that the feel of the ensemble has been restored and slowly but surely we are seeing Booth and Brennan reconnect as well. Like I said before, they were separated for a good chunk of time so it makes sense that it took them some time to get their groove back. This, though, is where the rubber meets the road for Booth, because he isn't a cheater. Isn't. Not even for Brennan. So what does he do when he realizes that he has a girlfriend he loves and a partner who he is absolutely gaga for who now regrets not giving him a shot?

I'm pretty sure that's what we'll find out this week, but in the meantime, we've got that last scene to get us through. Brennan is definitely the "one" Booth loved first. Now that they're back in DC their schedule is such that she is the one he spends the most time with, and in this instance he CHOOSES to spend that time only with her even when she offers to let him invite Hannah. And he I've read several interpretations of this scene but my gut feeling is that the writers are trying to tell us Hannah is on her way out and while the breakup might bum Booth out, it's not going to crush him or send him off on a gambling spree, or any number of things we've done to the poor man in fan fiction. No, he'll make some sort of choice, live with the consequences, and  when he turns back around Brennan will be there. And they'll both be ready.
