So Ma Petite and I have been going to a Farmer's market once a week, every week, for a couple of months now, with a break only when she went to England. We've also talked
sheepykins into comming with us now that she's in the area-ish. It's absolutely fabulous, though now I'm a little discouraged at buying much since I'm in the process of moving out and just don't feel like cooking much because of the mess it makes. I want to do minimal cooking so I can pack everything up and move it, not waste time washing it & putting it away.
In anycase, I got a small bag of apples this past weekend to go in my lunches, since the heirloom varietals started showing up, including quite a few I hadn't tried. And after seeing what sort of variety they had for Tomatoes (I estimate there were up to 50 different types spread out over several weeks, with a peak in the middle), I figured I could get at least one new type of apple a week all through fall, so I could expand my horrizons.
Well, I'm going to have a rough time doing that after the one I tried the first of today. It was a "Jonamac", which is a crossbreed between "Jonathan" apples, and "McIntosh" apples. It was SOOOOOO good. Sweet and tart and lush and firm and, just, well, delicious. And the flavor was different than any apple I've ever encountered. I MUST have more.
In anycase, does anyone out there have some particularly favorite varietals they drool over, especially ones that don't usually show up in megamarts?
