Some stimulus payments are sent as "Money Network" cards

May 31, 2020 13:31

This important advice is from a very good friend whom I've known for nearly 20 years. She is active in my congregation and works as a geriatric social worker in a major Philadelphia hospital. I sometimes say that she's never happy unless she's helping someone.

if you get unexpected mail from "Money Network" which feels like it has a credit card in it, OPEN IT! It's your stimulus payment. Clear as mud. But if you activate it and then register at EIPcard.com, you can transfer it to your bank account. Apparently lots of people have been throwing them out, because it does look just like junk mail. Then if you don't personally need the money, figure out the best places to donate it.

Q: Thank you! I didn’t throw it out, but wanted to look into further. They didn’t even get our names right, so I don’t even know if we can use it. It is, definitely not how our names appear when we file taxes. I’m not sure what to do about it. Call the IRS? Our accountant?

A: don't worry about your name. If the last 6 of the Soc of the first person match then it will go through.

Q: I don’t think I saw the social anywhere the very vague letter that can with it. I’ll look.

A: no the Social is needed when you call to verify.

Q: yeah, I was afraid to call, in case it was some grand phishing scheme.
