I did a couple of small things today (well, yesterday by the clock) to help other people. The first was at my hearing test. Another patient who was at the registration desk coughed, so I reached into my purse for a cough drop and offered it to her. Her eyebrows went up and she smiled.
"Do you always carry cough drops to give to strangers?"
"Well," I answered, "I know how helpful they are to me."
Later, after driving back home, I was looking for a parking space. As I stopped at the end of a small street to turn right onto the avenue, I saw a man trying to fit a couch, which he had evidently just purchased from the store on the corner, into the back of his minivan. He had it in as far as he could go, but quite a bit of it was sticking out, overhanging the tailgate. Through the window I asked if he had a rope. He said, "No, but I'm only going two blocks."
I pulled around the corner to a NO STANDING spot, opened my trunk, and found what I wanted: a length of some kind of red braided cording, wrapped up on itself. "Here," I said.
His face brightened with surprise and pleasure. "Thanks! I'll bring this back to you as soon as I'm done. Where do you live?"
"Above the restaurant over there." I pointed.
"Great. I'll leave it with them."
I went around the block and found a parking place, then went upstairs with my stuff. After taking off my shoes, I went to open the window and saw him walking into the restaurant with the rope. I called up to him but he didn't hear, so I put my slippers on and headed down the stairs. I missed him in the restaurant, but the waitress came out with the cord before I could say "Let me take that off your hands." As I left, he was just preparing to pull away and waved to me.
This kind of stuff makes me feel awfully good.
