The Twilight World by
Werner Herzog My rating:
4 of 5 stars Werner Herzog wrote this novel based on his meeting with and the experience of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who defended a small island in the Philippines during WWII. An expert in guerilla tactics, Onoda had been left behind with orders to hold the island and he committed himself to those orders, never learning the war had ended and defending the island for 29 years after the war had ended. The story is moving and powerful, full of heartbreak and the difficulty of fighting in a humid jungle, and yet Onoda's commitment to his cause and his command has heroism in it. A short novel that imagines a difficult life.
