As
this news story points out, Nashville is being invaded by cicadas.
Almost everyone I've talked about them with here hates them. They find them ugly (especially their big red eyes) and noisy. They fly into your face. Their husks litter the walkways.
I don't hate them. In fact, I kind of like them. I find them fascinating. As the article says, they're pretty much harmless. They're just looking to mate and lay eggs - can anyone really begrudge them that? They live their whole lives in darkness and only get a brief glimpse of daylight. And this is it. They're noisy 'cause they're here to PARTY!!!!
That's kind of amazing. Sometimes it takes a rare event to make us step out of our daily lives and really appreciate the world around us. Nature is all around us. It's not just when we retreat into the woods or up in the mountains. The cicadas are here to remind us that life goes on beyond us and our petty worries. The world is a very big place and it was here before people and it will be here after.
So hey there, buddy!
