A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Newton Peck

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A well-written and insightful YA novel about a young boy (13) coming into his own in a Shaker family. At times heart-warming, at heart-breaking, it is a powerful book that mixes memoir and fiction.

If On a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this book as part of my Experimental Book Club and thoroughly enjoyed it. Many reviews are quick to point out that it is ten novels rather than one, but that's not entirely true. It is a postmodern novel that works with the ideas of reading, writing, and what it means to be an Author and a Reader. Not for everyone, but thoughtful and beautifully written.
