Expanding my horizons

Apr 20, 2009 10:24

Two things that I just want to note here briefly (I hope to do a longer entry soon, but I've been very busy lately).

1. Saturday night, I went to my first opera. rosepurr and I, along with friends, attended the Nashville Opera's performance of La Boheme. I admit to being trepidatious, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

2. I've been trying to read and appreciate more poetry these days. Last night, for instance, rosepurr read some of her faves to me on our screened-in porch as rain fell and lightning lit the night. Our friend Christina, a published poet with an MFA, has been introducing us to new poets as well (I mentioned the awesome Claudia Emerson in a previous post). In that vein:

Donkey Gospel: Poems by Tony Hoagland

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hoagland's poems deal with a variety of topics, but at their core they deal with masculinity in the contemporary world. He finds wonderful metaphors and images that speak to the frustrations, joys and confusions of being a man. Highly recommended.

You can sample some of his poetry here. (The first two poems are in this collection.)
