[I hate, hate, hate this] I don't care if anyone thought it was cute, I hate that Blair feels like she needs Dan's help to ~find herself~, okay? It's everything I don't want and don't need them to be. I mean, how fucked up is this. I LOVE Blair acknowledged that she let her life be defined by her boyfriends for years and also that she said she doesn't want to live in anyone

I hated this episode too. I feel like the writers are just putting contrivances there to make Dair be dramatic, when they should be focusing on the comedy. Then again, both Dan and Blair have gone through some rather fucked up events these past 3 years. Blair especially.
But I have to agree with others in here on their thoughts. I don't think Dan is there to ~help~ Blair find herself. When Blair said she didn't her identity to be defined by the man she was dating, he said "No man...can take that (your identity) away from you." And that includes him. I'm actually glad they had that conversation because it's like the show is saying: we know we defined Blair especially through her relationships and we're not going to do that anymore. I also think the conversation is important because from seasons 2-4, many of the characters WERE defined solely by who they are dating. How often were we told it was Blair and Chuck, Chuck and Blair? How often was Serena's value defined by who she was dating (even if it was just the throwaday guest star of the week?). And, what is more, that co-dependency was prized, even when it was hardcore destructive. And, it's like the writers realized "whoops, we made a mistake!" Which is why they keep saying week after week "Dan and Blair, individual people, but awesome couple."
And, even Serena. Yes, she's pissed about Dan, but remember seasons 2-4? Her entire story arcs where defined by who she was dating. Or not dating. Remember when said "I need to find myself" when rejecting both Dan and Nate at the beginning of season 4, and then immediately started dating her teacher? Now, she's so caught up with trying to keep her job, being GG, and family issues, that she's actually...focusing on herself. (Yes, it's in twisted ways: she's still concerned about being irrelevant, but she's being far more pro-active in steering the wheel of her life than she has been in seasons.)
