I'm sniffly because I have a cold and I just finished HBO's John Adams miniseries.

"Oh, for God's sake, John, sit down!" She said it! Abby said it! Hee. Okay, the scene was pretty intense (their daughter was having a breast removed without anesthesia OMG) but I still giggled.

Please tell me Laura Linney won an Emmy for this. I suppose I could look it up on imdb.com. She was terrific.

ETA: Oh, she did win! Good.

So was Paul Giamatti as Adams. I wasn't sure I liked him at first, but his portrayal grew on me.

If I weren't so OTP about John/Abby, I'd probably be OTP about John/Thomas <-- there's a ship name! To what have I reduced my nation's proud history? Shipping. But they kept busts of each other! Which they gazed at fondly while writing such eloquent letters. *sigh* But I love how Abigail was always "my friend." Somehow, coming from John, that was more powerful than "my love." It made her his equal, and in this version of events, she was very much his equal. I like to think real life was somewhat similar; they certainly had a highly successful marriage.

WOW. They really underused Rufus Sewell's Alexander Hamilton. He really comes across as a nutjob in this series; his considerable accomplishments are barely mentioned. I don't think they mentioned his famous death at all.

I was amused by Adams's haranguing of the artist Trumbull, for taking artistic license with history. A little meta there, HBO?

I wish there'd been more (or any) about Adams's involvement in Massachusetts politics, following his departure from office. He didn't just hang around the farm with Abigail and the kids. According to McCullough, he tried to get the state constitution amended, in order to extend religious freedom to the Jews. It didn't work, but I love that he tried.

John Adams wasn't the best president this country ever had (he only made it into the Top Quartile once, according to Wikipedia). The Alien and Sedition Act was truly a shame, though he was right to keep us out of war with France. All the same, he was a pretty remarkable individual, to whom this country owes a great deal. One wonders what the United States would have been like, had it not been for his efforts.

So, now I'm onto Jefferson!

i heart john adams
