20 years ago:
I was in second grade, and really, really cute! My second grade teacher, Mrs. Haft, was kind of an ogre and looked like Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but she adored me, so I adored her. The highlight of second grade was hatching chicks in the classroom. The lowlight may have been having to sit next to Billy, who picked his nose.
15 years ago: I was 12, and starting seventh grade. I had Mr. Silver for Science and Mr. Walsh for Social Studies. I loved them, but the school year mostly sucked. I was awkward, unpopular. These three girls liked to sit in back of me and throw things into my hair, which I wore long and tangled. They stopped after I reported them to the assistant principal.
10 years ago: I was seventeen, and starting my senior year of high school. I was about to have my heart broken by my first love but, apart from that, it was a good year - my one good year at high school. I don't know what happened, but I finally broke out of the slump I'd been in since...well, since seventh grade! I started joining clubs, volunteering. I only wish I'd taken N to the prom, instead of J.
5 years ago: I'd been in Japan for about a month and a half, and was starting to venture out of my home city. I think it was in early October that I took a couple of days off from work and went to Kyoto. It was cool. My apartment was ucky, but I was getting paid a nice amount of money, and I was loving having sushi every day. I'd been to my first enkai, and made a couple of friends.
1 year ago: I'd recently come back from visiting a friend in Chicago, and decided I loved the city, despite only having seen Hyde Park and Milennium Park! I wasn't sure I wanted to get a Masters in Creative Writing anymore, but I wanted to go to grad school. I returned to Minnesota feeling particularly trapped.
So far this year... New job! College reunion! One date so far - gah! Um. New car. Hurt my back. Was given more responsibilities at the cat shelter. Saw a lot of theater. Was near a tornado. Lloyd Alexander died. I put my feet in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time in five years. Watched too much tv. Applied to grad school.
Yesterday: Started reading the first Aubrey/Maturin book. Bought a birthday present for my not-quite-stepdad. Had dinner with him and his kids.
Today: Lovely, overcast, crisp autumn day. Went for coffee and chocolate biscotti at Nina's. After work, I'm going to meet my family at the Science Museum, then celebrate not-quite-stepdad's birthday. Will probably not be back in time to catch The Office, so I'll download it somewhere.
Tomorrow: Friday! I get out of work at noon, and I'm going to give blood if they'll let me. (Last time, my iron count was too low, so they gave me a box of cereal, a box of raisins, and sent me home.) I'll probably be too woozy to do much more after that. But, uh, I should work on my grad school apps.
