people make me so angry sometimes

May 13, 2005 13:56

I'm working on an application for an RPG, and a ficlet, and a couple of mix CDs. Then I spot this letter in today's paper and GRRR. So, I wrote a response.

A May 13 letter contends that God's plan can't possibly include "a homosexual lifestyle" because of the "unique design of male and female anatomy." Never mind the fact that not everyone believes in the existence of the letter writer's deity. Is this logical? That homosexual marriage ought to be banned because men and women have interlocking genitalia? I could be exceptionally crude here, but I'll leave what I'd love to say to the imagination of the reader.

Before anyone brings up procreation, let me remind you of the fact that not every heterosexual couple can or chooses to have children. Should these couples be barred from marrying?

Here's a radical notion. Maybe marriage should have something to do with love. Maybe an ideal marriage should involve two adults (whether they're two men, two women, or a man and a woman) who love each other and wish to make a public and legally binding commitment to each other. Given that we live in a pluralistic society and not a theocracy, perhaps any interpretations of God's plan (any god's plan) should be left to individuals and not used as an excuse to disenfranchise a group of people.

Seems logical to me.
