Summary:
Over sixteen years, Diaval became Maleficents wings, eyes, ears, and much more. There were times when he was glad to help, and times when he wondered if he was losing himself.
This was my assignment. I always sort of knew what I wanted to write about this character, but about two weeks before the deadline I scrapped my first draft, since it wasn't quite working. I'm glad I did, since I'm happier with the results. I kept seeing crows on my walks around the neighborhood. Nothing they did really influenced this story, but I liked seeing them while I was writing.

This was the treat I wrote, which ended up being a lot longer than I'd anticipated. I should have posted it in the main collection, I guess, but instructions were contradictory and I didn't feel like poking the mods mere hours before the collection went live. Anyway. This is future fic, but nothing bad happens to Mari. (I would never. It's hard: Shayera was there first and I love her, but Mari is also awesome. And I also ship John with Wally. *sigh* They should just share him, but that probably wouldn't be in character.)
Anyway, both of my recipients liked their stories, so I'm happy! This Yuletide was a lot less stressful than last year's, since I didn't try to do anything too ambitious.
