This is my Yuletide 2011 story, which I wrote for
notannette. She asked for a post-canon story (or a fusion with screwball comedies of the 1930s, which would have been awesome, if I'd been more familiar with the genre). I decided to go with Bess as my POV character because she's adorable in the film and I liked the idea that there was more to her. There's some evidence to support my interpretation: Bess has been married multiple times, sneaks in and out of the castle, actively pursues Much, and is fiercely protective of Maid Marian. She even snaps at Robin once! Do not mess with Bess.
I wish I'd had a little more time to develop my idea. I'd like to have explored Bess's backstory and her (professional) relationship with Eleanor of Aquitaine, which I only got to hint at here. (Yeah, I brought in Eleanor. I couldn't resist trying to fix the historical inaccuracies of the source, just a little bit.)
