a brief commentary before I sleep

So, it's 7:54 A.M. and I'm just about to head to bed. But why, pray tell, am I awake at this unseemly hour? Shocking news: I have a job!

Every night, from 11 P.M. to 7 A.M., I work the third shift at an automobile parts factory, doing inventory. This job is (a) incredibly easy and (b) incredibly boring. I was recruited for this via a temp agency. The application to said agency involved rigorous (read: sarcasm) tests on subjects like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and general typing. Despite my excellent results on these tests, I have been recruited for a job that has NOTHING to do with computers. Well, I guess you could count the bar code zappy gun as a kind of computer, but I don't even use it, instead choosing the more simplistic route of paper and pen.

My job consists of sitting, surfing the internet, reading, and listening to music. Oh, and every hour or so (sometimes there's an even bigger gap), some guy will come along and ask for a few boxes of gloves or something. I get paid 9.50 an hour for doing this.

On the downside, the hours are TERRIBLE (even by my ridiculous nocturnal standards). Also, the environment is crap. I am constantly surrounded by noisy machines, and I have to sit in an uncomfortable chair in a cage for eight hours. There is an office inside the cage, but I'm always afraid I'll miss the people that come up to the front desk if I'm back there. Sometimes I'll just pace around the cage in circles over and over again like some animal at the zoo. Finally (and here's the kicker!), I'm only doing it for THIS week. I have two more nights to go (I've done it four nights thus far). This is actually a good thing (I would kill myself if I had to work such horrendous hours every day for the rest of the summer). I'm just filling in for some guy's vacation, so that's why it's so temporary. Hopefully, my semi-good performance on this job will open pathways to even MORE automobile part manufacturing plant opportunities! Or someone could just hire me to type shit or something.

I've been reading A Confederacy of Dunces at work quite a bit, and it's a pretty decent book. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes funny books! IT'S QUITE FUNNY! Oh, and it won the Pulitzer or something.

On that note, it's time to go to SLEEP. Maybe more updates on my amazing work adventures when I feel like it.
