In case some of you didn't notice I was out of town for the past 2 days (yes, that is what "Out." means in my away message), I went to UNC Chapel Hill to check it out. It was alright, but my first night was rather interesting to say the least.
We arrived at the Carolina Inn sometime in the mid afternoon and sat around the lounge for a while waiting for our room to be ready. After going up and resting for a little whiles, we decided it was nice to go get something to eat at one of the restaurants. We heard that Frankin St. was the place to be for DA EATZ, so we headed down there.
Keep in mind that I heard wonderful things about UNC's atmosphere. In fact, many people bring it up as one of the major selling points of the college.
Now, when we arrived on the street and saw hundreds upon hundreds of black people, I didn't really think anything of it. I mean, believe it or not, I'm not racist so it wasn't a big deal. However, as we kept walking around, I noticed things.
They spoke in ebonics. They were smoking pot. They had metal teeth and looked "ghetto." I saw 2Pac shirts everywhere, and some fat girl had a shirt that said "I Love Dick" as well as a guy that had "M.O.B. Money Over Bitches" I was almost laughing out loud at that one. :]
At one point, everyone started yelling and kind of running away, which was sort of frightening but apparently turned out to be nothing.
I was not quite sure this atmosphere was right for me (I did nto particularly see droves of pot smoking ghettoers as a driving point for my college decision), but the next day discovered that they were all gathered for some event that was occurring that night. Apparently, it's once a year or something, so that was kind of a relief.
Anyway, college was nice, although I am worried about class size. There's that whole business about the Honors Program, but I didn't get in and being in a semester of classes the size of Idaho along with no guarantee I will get out of them is kind of worrysome.
On a side note, there are a few concerts that I am going to this summer and I would be happy for any of you to join me on my adventures. My only request is that you actually enjoy the music and don't go if you're just gonna bitch about how much the bands suck. :P
first concert is Ozzfest -
Kathy and I have decided on Sun 7/31 - Indianapolis, IN - Verizon Wireless Music Center, although I suppose it's still open to some question. Bands there (that I like) include Iron Maiden (duh), In Flames, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, and quite a few other bands I would enjoy listening to, even though I don't know their stuff. All of those except Maiden are pretty much extremely heavy metal, screaming, etc. Maiden's more classic metal.
I'm not gonna write out CD suggestions for all those bands but Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind is a good one.
second concert is Judas Priest / Queensryche -
I haven't made any decisions on this.
http://www.queensryche.com/tour/index.html is the dates for the tour. There's one where Warped was held last year in Atlanta, I think. That seems pretty cool, and it's on June 21st.
Both of these bands rule completely. Judas Priest is classic metal, and they just recently got Rob Halford back so if you go you're in for a treat if you like metal. Queensryche is prog metal, and they're awesome too. Hopefully, they play some stuff off of their oldest albums (including Operation Mindcrime :]).
Judas Priest - Painkiller rules all, and Queensryche - The Warning and Operation: Mindcrime are good also.
Anyway, long ass post, etc. Hope to see some of you guys this summer at these concerts!
