Five Children and It:
I'd never seen this movie, though I know at least one of my sisters watched it back home. Can't remember what I was doing at the time, but I walked in just as the movie was ending.. so I watched it last night.
Fun times.
Seems to me to be a bit of a hybrid movie, in that, it reminds me of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe a little, with the five children being sent to a crazy uncle's castle during the war. (Though it's WWI and not WWII, and they have a crazy cousin, who joins in the romp by being an absolute terror with a mad-scientist sort of attitude and a laboratory to match.) The children (sans cousin) find a secret door that leads to a different place, though the more frequently they go there, it seems the closer that world gets to this one, because sometimes, they no longer need the door to get back to their uncle's home.
It does have a recurring theme, though.."Be careful what you wish for...and how you phrase it." In making wishes with the Sand Faery, they generally wind up worse off than they were before making the wish. And Nanny McPhee'ish, generally can't make the wish stop before it's caused all sorts of mayhem, and they require the services of a maid who helps them keep the secret and clean up after their failed wishes.
Loads of fun to watch, even late at night, when I'd should have been sleeping (because I was sick.. and am sick still.)
