I have not read them in so long, I wonder what my impression now would be? I liked them so much back then (when I was in college, so more than 20 years ago) I have the whole set in my collection. I've always thought I would enjoy giving the whole series a re-read, but now I have some doubts . . . where do you read the Methods of Rationality version? Have you ever read the Magicians series, btw? by Lev Grossman? some people tout that as a very dark, adult spin-off of Harry Potter. It's very much its own thing, though (has echoes of Narnia too, in my opinion).
You can read it online on the website https://hpmor.com/ or download a PDF version there. I'm pretty sure there are .epub versions around, I need to track one down so I can do my next reading on my Kindle.
I had expected to enjoy it a lot as well, but now I think that Harry Potter was special because it was one of the first good YA books. We've had so many of them since then, the YA genre has evolved so much, I think the first HP book got left in the dust.
I suspect the series might have gotten better book by book? But I'm not going to put the reading time in to find out.
I haven't read The Magicians, but it looks like I might enjoy it, so I'm going to grab a copy. Thanks!
