Welcome to America, where people can go bankrupt and have their life ruined if they have to go to the hospital. Luckily mine is about 80% covered. The total bill for a couple hours in the hospital was about $10,000. The ambulance trip alone (took maybe 10 minutes?) cost almost $2,000.
A few years ago, I woke up in a pool of blood. Staggered to the nearest clinic. They called 911. Ambulance took me to the hospital. CAT scan, stitches, several consulations. Doctor's office to remove stitches. Got a bill in the email. $40 Canadian, exactly double the cost of a taxi ride to the hospital. Apologetic letter saying they had to charge that to save the ambulances for people really needing them, and they'd gladly waive it if it was a hardship.
Argh, medical bills are awful. I wish US would go to the same sort of system that Canada has, instead of the convoluted mess we have now. I suppose it will never happen as long as the insurance companies are around to line politician's pockets.
One pound is nothing, don't worry about it. Your weight fluctuates during the day sometimes, and your scale might be a bit off too.
