title: Polaroid Perfect (a remix of Snapshots)
pairing: Kyuhyun/Zhou Mi
summary: Kyuhyun finds another truth, and hopes that it would be the same as all the others.
author's notes: for my baby jedisnickers.tina and i have discussed countless theories of when kyuhyun and zhou mi met - and whether they already knew each other by the time kyuhyun's accident happened. with heechul's cyworld entry saying that zhou mi and heechul met in 2006, it'd be safe to assume that zhou mi knew all of super junior by 2007. tina xiaojie, umma loves you very very much. thank you for being the (very fruity) zhou mi to my kyuhyun.

Kyuhyun likes photographs. He likes looking at them and taking them, too. He likes photographs of people more than anything, because he likes to see how their faces are laid bare. He knows that no amount of acting skill can deny the truth from a camera, and so Kyuhyun uses it to gauge people's feelings: he prefers watching people rather than asking them things - people can lie (how many times has Eeteuk said "I'm fine"?), but body language never does.

He also likes photographs because it lets him remember. Fun times, sometimes even bad times. It makes him remember not to forget.

(He looks at the photo taken on Zhou Mi's twenty-second birthday, Super Junior - M in China, a small surprise party with big hugs and even bigger smiles. Kyuhyun remembers that day, but looking at the six familiar faces - the seventh one his own - and he remembers the day the year before: Kyuhyun remembers the crash, the splitsecond of pain before blacking out. He remembers being broken but wanting to live. Kyuhyun remembers that he fought to stay alive, and he remembers to be always thankful for his second chance.

And every year, Kyuhyun will remember to celebrate Zhou Mi's birthday, because it now feels like it is also his own.)

The morning of Zhou Mi's twenty-second, the other boys come into Zhou Mi's room, whispering and chuckling among themselves before having Donghae poke at the sleeping lump under the blankets. Wake up, gege. Good morning!

Zhou Mi grunts and groans an unintelligible complaint, swatting Donghae's hand away. Zhou Mi burrows deeper under the covers, muffling whimpers of annoyance.

When nothing happens, Kyuhyun breaks into song, soft yet strong: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you - somewhere in the melody Ryeowook adds his voice, Henry laughs and beatboxes at Han Geng's cue, Donghae singing along brightly, Han Geng and Siwon inviting Zhou Mi to get up - Happy birthday, dear Zhou Mi. Happy birthday to you!

Zhou Mi finally peeks out from his cocoon, smiling. He meets Kyuhyun's eyes, and Kyuhyun knows that Zhou Mi remembers the other anniversary that people forget. Zhou Mi's smile is still there, but his eyes are serious, grateful.

Ge, you look like a spring roll gone wrong. Kyuhyun takes a photograph of the birthday boy, rolled up in the blankets and all.

(Kyuhyun thinks of the polaroid stuck to the mirror in his bedroom at the Beijing dorm. It is of a calendar with a date encircled. Zhou Mi had given him this a few months after SJM debuted, when Kyuhyun's body gave out from all the stress.

This was when you said my name when you were at the hospital. Zhou Mi was smiling when he said that. I - we thought we'd never hear your voice again.)

Zhou Mi gets up, and Siwon presents him with a small birthday cake, the same way Zhou Mi had done for Siwon twelve days earlier. Zhou Mi closes his eyes to make a wish, then blows the candle out. The room erupts in applause and cheers, and Han Geng gives Zhou Mi a hug, while Henry swipes some frosting off the cake and smears it on Ryeowook's cheek. Scandalized, Ryeowook takes frosting off the cake too, chases Henry, but it is Donghae who is ultimately the casualty when Henry successfully evades Ryeowook (Donghae swears he could smell frosting on himself for hours).

Kyuhyun took photographs of everything for evidence.

(Zhou Mi took a picture when Kyuhyun first woke, battered, but more importantly, alive.

Kyuhyun asked for a pen and some paper when he realized that he couldn't speak. He wrote slowly, hand a bit shaky, but he was determined to have his say: What day is it? And Zhou Mi told him the date.

Kyuhyun frowned. I never got to greet you on your birthday.)

Later that day, at Zhou Mi's birthday party at Mrs. Han's store, Kyuhyun hands Zhou Mi a small wrapped parcel. I wish I had time to get you a better present. Kyuhyun shoves his hands into his pockets as Zhou Mi opened the gift, a slim leather-bound volume. Something to write your songs and other stuff in, ge.

Zhou Mi pulls him close for a hug. Having you around is the best present I could ever ask for, Kui Xian.

(Kyuhyun finds a photograph on the fridge door, taken on the day he and Zhou Mi first met. On the photo, Zhou Mi had scribbled: For always. Kyuhyun gets a pen and writes under the other. You bet. ^^b)

Kyuhyun goes to bed that night, exhausted from their schedule, but happy. He takes a photo of himself smirking.

(Here to stay. With you.)
