God... you broke my heart. THis moment through Xander's eyes seems so particularly painful. He was the optimist, the believer--and here, the fact that he has lost his beliefs--it just hurts.

*pets you* Sorry.
I think that opening scene in the Magic Box was the most depressed the gang ever where, even compared to season 7, but it was a collective mood - just 'til they got thinking again. Did he come over as having lost his belief for ever? I may have over done it, maybe?
And it was the most heartbreaking episode, up to that point, in the whole series. That last shot before they cut to the grave stone, as the camera panned across the faces...

Loved the reiteration of the forces of nature - flotsam and whirlwind and tsumani, it works beautifully without being overdone.

Interesting that Xander still sees Giles as the adult amongst them, when he himself is working and proposing marriage - self perception is a funny thing.

And that last line just killed me! Sends you mental flowers.

Thank you. I started off thinking about swimming against the tide - so The Gift just seemed right.
Xander at this point still doesn't really see himself as adult - maybe doesn't see himself clearly at all. He may have proposed, but as we see in season 6, he hasn't really thought it through. That's also why he thinks it is Willow's idea that starts them off on making plans, rather than his own.

*smiling* Thank you (assuming you meant this instance, rather than in general). *grin*

I just came to this via BuffyverseTop5, and it's really lovely. "And Dawn was coming down the stairs alone" -- so stark and sad and beautiful, it just made me sigh.

Thank you very much. I wrote this so long ago, I had to reread it myself, to remember it. 'Lovely' is a wonderful compliment. You have made me smile this Monday morning.
