The Tinsel and Tommy-Guns Holiday Ball

"A little to the left." I smiled up at John, glad that he had decided to take on some of the work this time. During the first six years of our marriage, he was content to leave the hosting duties up to me. I never considered a holiday party something John could get into before he told me about his interest in Art History. I guess you could say, ( Read more... )

"Like I said, I look for people with certain abilities who might be useful on a team that I'm hoping to put together." Linus hoped she wouldn't ask anymore questions about his job. With Isabel in the room and more than likely ready to bark threats at himself and Rusty, the two of them had met their quota of thief hating females for the night. Generally speaking, most people didn't understand the amount of skill and hard work that went into the type of acquisitions Linus made a living out of. It was easier to avoid talking about it than to lie, but he could usually do that too, he just didn't want to be dishonest with her.

"How about you?" He asked, finally remembering that it was within his rights to ask her questions too. And considering how she was looking for a friend in the city, it was probably a good idea for him to know what she did.

He couldn't judge by looking at her, that much Linus was sure of. And she didn't appear to be a woman who would enjoy working a desk job. Aside from that, Linus didn't have the slightest clue as to what her profession could be.

Poor Faith, seriously this guy is like a super nice guy and kind of clean cut in that trying to be a good guy even though he isn't type way, he's more nervous than he should be and Faith is just oblivious to the guy he is. She's just all, mmmm... boy. Mmmmm... boy smell good. She's on autopilot, so when he asks her what she does? She tells him. Flat out. Doesn't even care.

"Me? I'm a Slayer. All those stories you hear growing up? Vampires, Demons icky things that go bump in the night? All true. I kill them. Damn good at it too." She's practically saying this onto his neck, cause she can't stop smelling him. What is UP with her?? Man she needs to learn to either get trashed really fast or not at all, cause that whole sipping and taking her time crap has gotten her all mellow and girly.

Oh and that warmth he might feel on his neck right about now? That would be Faith. Kissing his neck. Yeah I don't know what she is thinking, but apparantly it is mmmm... kissing.

Linus wasn't entirely sure how to take the information Faith had given him, especially when he combined it with the way he was feeling from what she was doing to him. The idea of a vampire slayer was something he couldn't quite grasp at a normal time, let alone when a beautiful woman was taking an interest in him.

While he could have asked her about it more, or tried to think it over and freak himself out with it, Linus decided to let it go. Whatever it was that Faith was talking about, she seemed okay by it. Since it wasn't his job to slay vampires, he didn't think it was something he needed to worry about.

He just hoped she didn't do it drunk.

"Cool." He replied, his voice barely above a whisper, probably because what Faith was doing made him want to be more discreet, even if he wasn't making any advances on her himself.

"Do you want to sit down or uh, something?" Linus asked, trying to be accomodating. "I mean, are you okay?"

She doesn't even remember what she said to him, mainly because the autopilot has been switched on for her and she is pretty much in that 'mmm... boy' mode right now. Girls been a bit lonely lately anyway. Running around after spoiled suburban girls trying to explain to them that they won't die just because they have had sex.

In those moments Faith is just upset because that means they have had sex more recently than her, which is upsetting since she usually has about a good ten years on them. So we can just assume that Faith is itching for some 'boy' to say the least. That Jason guy was nice, but he was too perfect, there wasn't a challenge to a guy that could meet her eye to eye on things.

Linus was more fun. There was the slight nervous stutter and the calmness that he handled all of Faith's moves on him too. Plus he had gotten extremely quiet since she started macking on his neck, and that just pleased her even more. She had impact on this guy, and that was always a nice feeling.

She had just pushed herself up against him, which means he better pray his glass was set on the bar or it went spilling somewhere. She's still only working on his neck, mostly breathy kisses while she listens to him talk.

He suggests moving, which is a good suggestion, but if Faith is going to be moving it would more than likely be out of that house and somewhere else. They could take her Chrylser Crossfire and turn on the engine so the heat was running, or they could go to her hotel. But she figured he was too much of a 'nice boy' for a suggestion that daring.

"Me? I am excellent aren't I?" She is overly confident as her body snakes around to the front of him letting her hands shove into his back pockets. "I'll go wherever you want." Ahhh the implied ineundo that isn't quite right, but who cares cause he has a really nice ass and she currently has got a good hold on it.

Linus swallowed on nothing, the nervousness from a few minutes before coming back, though it was a more faint feeling than it had been at the start of their conversation. He didn't want to up and run the way that he had hoped to originally. Now Linus was content to be near her. Near the beautiful almost stranger whose name he knew and whose profession seemed even more questionable than his.

The closer Faith moved to him the more Linus had to remind himself not to react. It wasn't that he didn't want to, it was just a bad decision for him, morally.

Really, Linus' main concern was the heavy scent of alcohol on Faith's breath. Sure, he was finally starting to realize that he could take her away from the party to have fun elsewhere. After all, Faith did say that she would go wherever he wanted. And as a result of Faith's advances, there were places Linus would have liked to go with her, and very personal things that he would have liked to do.

But drunk was drunk, and that meant he was out of luck.

"Then I think.."He ran his hands smoothly over her arms and traced down to her hands, removing them from his pockets gently. "You are excellent. And beautiful too, and a lot more interesting than any woman I've ever met in Chicago."

But drunk. Excellent and beautiful and interesting and drunk. He had to remind himself of that one, repeatedly.

"So we should let you sit down, with me if you'd like to, and you can tell me more about yourself."

Sadly she felt his hands run along hers only to remove them from where they had been quite comfortable. The compliments were nice, but they almost felt like a brush off to Faith. Wasn't she hot? Surely he wanted to just leave the holiday party and go somewhere and get naked, but still he was being the gentleman and Faith? Wasn't used to that at all. Plus he wanted to talk, which was really weird.

Faith had listened a lot earlier when she had met up with Connor, and the thought that someone at some random holiday party would be interested in anything she had to say that didn't end with "Your place or mine?" Still there was something about this guy that she wasn't really offended as much as she was shocked. So when he pulled her hands off of him, she stopped kissing him.

Color her shocked no one did that to Faith. Well except this guy. So she was being led now to the couch that had emptied just a few moments earlier. It was a nice couch. She had been on it with Jason earlier. Jason would have shown her a good time for sure, but that was a good three hours earlier and when she was only fourteen drinks into the evening. Maybe that was it. Maybe the twenty plus drinks had made her into some drunken fool hitting on some guy that wasn't interested in her at all.

Oh god. Has Faith gotten drunk girl syndrome?

"Talk about me huh?" Well if she's going to have to sit on the couch she's going to at least let one leg stradle his, so she hooks her left leg across his right one letting her heel bounce a bit before she starts to ramble, which actually considering how many drinks she has had? Is rare. Faith isn't that much of a talker when she drinks, she is girl of action, but since action has just been taken off the menu? She'll make do.

"Alright, so I'm from Boston, lived in California for a while, got in some bad 'sitch, got out of said bad 'sitch. Watched a town cave into a crater, headed to Chicago and have been there ever since. Came to New York to meet up with an old friend and it seems I made some new ones too."

There. It was the life of Faith sans prison and murderous rampage.

"Now your turn."

He made himself comfortable, resting his arm on the back of the sofa behind Faith's head. While she was talking Linus was mentally going over the places Faith had been, remembering his own time spent in each location. Boston was a city that Linus came and went in whenever he needed or simply wanted to. He had family and friends there and liked the area enough, but the opportunity to develop his craft was greater in Chicago.

Like Faith, he'd spent some time in California, though that was strictly for family vacations, and the occassional post Nevada road trip. From what he remembered, it was easy to get into a bad situation in California. That was part of the reason why he'd never considered living there.

Well, that, and it was a little too close to Vegas for his liking.

Linus recalled hearing about the collapse of some small California town, but he'd never paid much attention to it. Hearing that Faith was there after she'd called herself a vampire slayer didn't surprise him as much as it made him more curious about her. Either she was the weirdest woman he'd ever met, or there was a lot more to the world than what he'd seen of it.

"I'm from Chicago. I lived there mostly, traveled with work for a while, spent some time in Boston, ended up back in Chicago. And, like I said, I'm here on business."

There. The life of Linus Caldwell sans casino robbery and Amsterdam repayment heist.

"So..." He sighed, realizing he was exceptionally bad at conversation. "Any hobbies?"

No wonder it was so hard for Linus to date.

The guy was trying at least which seemed admirable to Faith. After the night she had on Friday coupled with the Company Party on Saturday Faith actually enjoyed the slightly uneasy way of Linus. Spending two nights in a row with over confident cocky men set on breaking some law or personal rule had more than a slight toll on Faith. Connor was a good kid, but emphasis on the word Kid. She thought of him that way, mainly because he was Angel's kid. Harry seemed a bit troublesome to Connor, but Faith wasn't going to stand in the way of what seemed pretty innocent.

So this was Faith. Spending a Sunday night on a couch in a complete strangers house, talking. It was a big change of pace, and was giving Faith a bit more time to think about stuff than she was used to when around a guy. Between the club and the rampant of sexual ineundo that she had been bombarded with around Harry and Connor Linus made her feel comfortable.

Faith had changed that much was sure, but still as she sat there sobering up rather quickly cursing her internal metabolism and Slayer gifts she didn't want to be the 'good girl' that did what was right. Faith had never been that girl, and suddenly the thought that she might become her gave her a chill.

"No hobbies, mostly because there is no time for that." Speaking of no time, there is no time like right now for Faith to shift her weight onto that leg that is still straddling Linus' lap. Her hand grabs onto his shirt pulling herself closer to him and kisses him. Full on Faith kissing going on, because well she isn't a good girl.

Linus began battling his conscience the very second Faith pressed her lips against his. Had his brain been able to fully function, Linus would have quickly separated from her and made that run for it that he'd initially planned. It was different when she was kissing him; his nature seemed to be losing the fight because the rest of him knew beyond a doubt that a part of him had been hoping for this from nearly the very beginning of their conversation.

Linus returned the kiss, knowing that he shouldn't let it continue while wanting it to at the same time. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to do, after all. Faith was pretty coherent for someone who'd obviously had more than a few, and even if that was just a smokescreen, well...

Linus finally pulled away, hating himself for stopping the most passionate woman he'd ever met from doing exactly what he wanted her to. He sighed, more to himself than to her, and tried to think of something to say to her that wouldn't sound like rejection.

It wasn't. In Linus' mind, he was doing the right thing to do. Sure, the right thing felt a little, well, wrong, but at least he knew she wasn't going to have anything to regret after the party, even if he did. And judging by the way things were going versus the way they could have gone, Linus figured he had a lot to regret.

"Sorry, I uh...I'm not used to this." He raised his hand up to rub his temples.

"You've had a lot to drink. And,--and that aside? We don't know each other, Faith."

Yeah, he couldn't have sounded any more like a girl if he had tried, but Linus was doing his best to explain it to her.

"You're someone I think I'd like to know."

Faith was actually taken back by the fact that despite all his nervousness throughout the night that he didn't jump out of his seat the second she made that single move. In fact he returned the kiss and Faith wasn't going to argue that point at all considering she was the one that started it. So Faith kept pushing the envelope with him, until finally he pulled away.

She could tell he was regretting that one, and smirked to herself a bit as she eased back onto the couch and off of his thigh, still leaving her leg there of course though. When he made the comment about her having a lot to drink she had to stifle a small laugh and covered her mouth, her eyes widening a bit. It was ironic to her that someone of the male persuasion of the species was actually telling her she was too drunk to fuck. Not that it was even going in that direction, but still it looked like Linus had put the brakes on that operation altogether. She regained her composure and pouted a bit over the not knowing her remark too, she was playing hurt but really didn't mind.

"Hey, it's no rush Linus. I wanted to kiss you so I did. No sense gettin' your panties in a bunch over it. But I might have had a lot to drink tonight, but honestly I could pass any sobriety test they give me," she paused for that dramatic effect and leaned over and whispered to him, pushing that envelope again, "I'd even blow clean."

Yeah, she said it. I feel really bad for him right now, cause there is no doubt that raised a red flag of some sort.

Linus glanced over at her, eyes wide. He was confused as all hell about how a woman could smell so completely inebriated and yet say things that were just plain cruel. Didn't she know how unfair that was to a guy? No, not just to a guy, to a guy who hadn't had physical contact with a woman in months. Couldn't Faith see what she was doing to him?

And then Linus came to the understanding that she could, and that every single ounce of pain and self hatred was probably registering on his face from that extremely low blow.

Blow. He hated the word now. Not necessarily the suggestion she'd given him, but the word itself for being able to make him feel a way he shouldn't in an already difficult situation. After all, Linus knew what he had to do.

It was just getting increasingly more difficult to keep up his determination on that one.

"...Oh. Well, that's...good. Yeah that's good. You wouldn't want to...fail a test like that."

He thought the safest thing to do was to go along with it. To pretend that they were still talking about sobriety tests and nothing more. It was easier that way. He didn't feel like the idiot of the year as much if he kept it in that direction.

Linus knew that Faith might not be willing to play along, but since she was already busy with one game he didn't think it would be much of an issue to her. Anyway, it was time to change the subject.

"How long will you be in town?"

Faith saw it. The flicker of 'this is wrong' in his eyes, and the overwhelming sense of confusion he had. Faith knew he was trying to do the good thing, and be the nice guy. She just wasn't used to that, so much so that pushing him as far as she could had been her plan. Up until she saw him break. Here was this guy that had been decent enough not to take advantage of her and she was trying to force his hand down her pants or something. It was the typical thing for her to do and somehow it didn't work for her in this situation.

There was no fortune teller forseeing this disaster for her, in fact Faith hadn't noticed the trainwreck this was becoming until it was almost too late. This was the first real conversation she had with a man, that wasn't Connor and she had been playing him like some toy right out of the box. She wasn't drunk, she wasn't really completely sober but she should have known better once things got to a certain point that it wasn't going anywhere else.

Still she pushed, and look where it got her. He was looking for the exit again, and had become master of changing the subject. It wasn't turning into the best night for her at all. Okay the kiss was good, but this wasn't really part of her plan. Then again? Faith never had plans.

Her leg moved of it's own free will off of his, releasing him, in case he ended up running for the door, and took the evil grin of naughty off her lips, "Hey, woah. Okay, I pushed too hard. Just girl like me? Doesn't usually have to push at all, you just seemed fun. I mean not that you aren't? Just seems like you got somethin' else on your mind and I really didn't mean to make things worse. I should'a backed off." she shook her head a bit, "I don't usually back off though. Kinda never applies ya know?"

Her hand ran through her hair tugging it back a bit, this was suddenly awkward, because she was now that girl that had been thinking she was on top of her game only to have all the pieces thrown off the board. She let out a breath trying to calm her insides down.

"I'm in town 'till tomorrow, then Boston 'till maybe the first? Not really solid plans or nothin' got some friends I'm seein' and then back to Chicago." She paused and took a good hard look at him, "Hey, we're cool right? I mean you ain't bustin' to hop the couch here on me are ya?"

Part of him was ready to run. Faith had moved her leg off of him, finally freeing him up to make a break for it, but then he thought about what she was saying to him. What he'd said before about not knowing Faith was completely true. He couldn't claim to have an understanding of anyone from one conversation, and Faith seemed to have a bit more going on than most, but one thing was obvious to him. Faith didn't know how to react to a person who was trying to turn her down. Either that meant that she did these things often, or had an extremely high amount of confidence in her sexual abilities. Or in the worst case scenario, she had both, and he really was an idiot to say no to her.

"No, I'm not." He shook his head, finally starting to recover from her suggestion. It wasn't easy to get something like that off of his mind. The offers were few and far between as it was.

"You can put your leg back if you need me to prove it." Linus managed to smirk at her, sitting back a little more and attempting to lessen the tension he was still feeling by making himself more comfortable.

"I'm alright now." Linus told her, hoping it was the truth. He would have explained it to her better if he knew how. It just seemed likely that Faith knew everything she needed to about his attitude towards what she wanted to make happen between them.

"You caught me off guard, that's all."

She caught the smirk, and her own smile returned quickly, which was good since she doesn't really brood. That was Angel's bag, and she never really understood how it got the girls so weak in the knees. Instead of straddling him again, she even relaxed a bit, shifting herself sideways on the couch to face him, and bringing her leg up underneath her while the other one kicked at his foot a bit. "Nah, this is fine. 'Sides, that cuts circulation to my foot after a while. Boots are heavy, and that usually adds a bit to the back of my knee."

She's leaning into the couch now her elbow bent letting her hand hide beneath her hair as it supports her head. "Yeah I tend to do that though, the catchin' people off guard? 'Course most times its for the best. Comes in handy on the job." The previously mentioned slaying of vampires and demons thing. Yeah. "Glad you're alright though, would be a shame for all that flirtin' I was doin' to just be for nothin' here."

She was actually amazed at how well behaved she had become, it was either well behaved or just tired of games that men expected a girl like her to play. In fact since showing up in New York that was all she had really. Guys that played just as hard as she did. This was something unexpected and it put her at ease, which was something most men had failed to do. Trust was usually never earned with the men Faith was with, mostly because they never stuck around long enough to earn it. There was something though, in his eyes that she couldn't figure out, and the thing was she wanted to figure it out.

"So, how 'bout you. New York 'till when?"

He felt relieved when she opted not to place her leg over him again. It wasn't that Linus didn't want to be near Faith, he was just starting to enjoy it a little too much. She was a woman who was hard--make that nearly impossible--to resist. He didn't know if he could keep it up if Faith had a few more drinks and continued to stay as close as she'd been since they'd met.

"Tomorrow, I have an evening flight. I promised my family that I'd be around for Christmas Eve."

Linus winced at his own mention of his family, thinking that it must have sounded strange to her. Men his age generally weren't rushing home to be with their relatives. Saying that he was going home for them had to have made him seem like some kind of introverted Momma's boy with an unhealthy attachment to family gatherings.

At the very least, it sounded immature and he wished he hadn't said it.

"Everyone flies in for the holidays. The person too busy to show up is the one who they spend half the night talking about."

And of course, they'd spend the other half talking about Linus whether he was there or not, but he liked to think that by being there he could somehow regulate it.

But that part was just in his head.

Faith didn't mind the remark about heading home for the holidays, what person that had a healthy relationship with their family wouldn't go home. Faith knew nothing about healthy families though, and wasn't about to judge someone just because they did.

"Must be nice, I mean aside from the talkin' about each other part. My family wasn't really the type to go hang out for the holidays." Truth was Faith had no clue where her family was these days. She had walked out all those years ago and hadn't looked back. Faith had finished her last drink before they had sat down onto the couch, and wasn't even looking for a new one to replace it. She didn't want to make him anymore uncomfortable than he already had been around her.

Faith wasn't sure just how to do this whole conversation thing. It had been a long while since she just sat down and talked to a guy without knowing where it was leading. However she did want to make sure that at least she got one thing done, before he darted like a deer running across the highway. But before she could even start to think about it she saw that tiny girl that was with Lindsey earlier start to head her way. The thing is? If this girl knew about her, that meant that she could open up a whole mess of trouble for Faith with this nice guy.

However Faith wasn't about to let this phase her just yet. The brunette was still a bit away and was stopping every so often to say hi to the random person. Faith stopped watching her for a moment and smiled at Linus, "Hey, you said you wanted to get to know me? Or you thought you did at least? Let me make it easy for you."

Faith grabbed the rest of the napkin that she had used earlier for her number to Jason and used the pen she stole as well to jot down her name, cell phone number and the number to her loft. "This is how to reach me, should you want to."

She folded it up and tucked it into his empty hand, then grabbed her cell phone. "So now? It's only fair." She started to type out his name ready to store his number in there too, it wasn't like Faith knew a million guys named Linus either, so all she needed was the first name. She sat there waiting for his number to be read out just in case that girl came over and decided to talk shop she could excuse herself and slap the woman later.
