Summary: Shifting through space and time isn't as easy as it looks when you collide with a big blue police box.
Notes: ... I think this came with the joke me and my friend share. Ven is a time lord (point - Roxas), and er, she usually sings 'let's do the time warp again'. And the plot bunny came strolling into my head, dammit.
Time to shift, he thought sullenly to himself, walking deeper and deeper into the woods. Nobody would see him here. It wasn't like anyone knew Ven's secret, at any rate - but he couldn't afford to let it get out that he could 'temporal shift' at will.
Nothing would get in his way here, either, as his Keyblade emerged out of the light in his left hand, and he held it up to the sky in the small clearing.
And then he started to shift.
Only, it went horribly, horribly wrong.
At the same time as Ven shifted into the vortex, he collided with something else - something big and blue and spinning rather rapidly. He heard the oddest sound he could possibly say he had ever heard - the sound of everything yet nothing. Even if it was impossible to hit directly, the object reacted to his presence, sending them both shaking into a new time scale.
Ven's head was near exploding with the pressure, as he felt himself falling through nothing, and something, and then nothing again; it was as though it was the darkness itself, or the blanket of nothingness Terra so often mentioned; until his face hit grass, soft yet hard.
And Ven knew no more, as a pair of trainers briefly snipped across his distorted vision.
***
As he came to, that odd sound was distantly playing again, but more clearly than before. His face was against cold hard metal, mesh pressed hard against his forehead. He winced a couple of times, stirring, until he stopped as a shadow passed over him.
"You awake?" came the voice - a pleasant enough one for someone who could be an enemy.
He lifted his head, neck straining and head pounding, as the man came into his full view, standing above him. "Yeah," he said weakly.
"I certainly wasn't expecting that when the TARDIS chucked me off course. It'd usually avoid anyone when it comes to land, yet, you were in the vortex..." his voice became a blur to Ven, as he disappeared out of his limited range of vision and hearing. It was all too much after coming too.
But where had he come to? He must have been brought in here - wherever here was. Now was no time to relax. Even the friendliest of beings could be an enemy... he had to remember that. Time for a bit of self-perseverance.
He tensed his muscles. As far as he could see, nothing was strained, and none of his bones rejected to the movement. That, all in all, meant nothing was broken. Yet, his head spun like he'd just rammed head first into a wall, and his mind seemed to be in four places at once. He sighed, managing to find a wall and hauling himself up to lean against it.
Ven looked up at his savoir - if he could be called that - again and blinked. The man was dressed in a pinstripe suit that was blue in colour, and his trench coat had been hastily flung on the console. He was busying himself, muttering away equations and looking up with immense care to the machine as he traipsed around it, as though he was comforting it, of all things. At some point glasses had appeared on his face as he worked on his machine. Finally Ven took in the interior in all its glory - wide, several rooms adjacent to the hall, and finally the console in the middle. He was silent as the man continued on, until Ven just had to cover up the silence.
"Who are you?" he said cautiously.
The man's head bobbed up from behind the dashboard, a wide smile on his face. "The Doctor," he said pleasantly, before disappearing out of sight again.
Ven raised an eyebrow. "Doctor who?"
The brown hair resurfaced for a few mere seconds, some appliance in his hand that resembled a screwdriver. "Just the Doctor, young man."
... Well, Ven certainly felt like he needed a doctor. Forcing aside the ringing in his ears. He rubbed the back of his head. "I think I need a doctor. My head aches."
There was a small buzzing noise, before the Doctor reappeared with his screwdriver in his hands, which he pocketed, and started to pace his way back round the console.
"Well," he mused, his face adjusting slightly in thought. "That's what you'd get if you collided headlong with the TARDIS," in the interim, he'd managed to cross the room, to be kneeling in Ven's full vision. "Only you didn't collide. Yet the TARDIS still shook you off. Caused quite a stir in her, I must say. Odd, odd indeed," he shook his head, before suddenly brightening again. "Who might you be?"
Ven hesitated, put off by the Doctor's forward explanation that seemed to just go on and on. He certainly seemed like a person who liked the sound of his own voice. And definitely was the type of person you just nodded to if you didn't have a clue what on earth they were talking about. Reluctantly, he replied, "Ven."
"Ven?" The Doctor repeated, before taking off his glasses, seeming to assess if Ven had now recuperated enough to answer the most pressing question on his mind. "Just what were you doing in the time vortex?"
Seemingly Ven did have enough of his mind back to get the Doctor's question, and was going to dodge it as much as possible. So what if he knew what it was, and had referred to it in such ways that the only person he'd ever told had said it was? He couldn't trust this 'Doctor', not yet. He shrugged slightly, never once taking his eyes away from the man. "Something."
"You can tell me." The Doctor blinked once, eyes boring deep into him, all knowing, but he seemed more worried this time. Sorrowful in a sense. "You're not a Time Lord, are you?"
That's some mood swing, Ven thought to himself, but decided it best not to comment. Even if he had no clue what a 'Time Lord' was, it wasn't something to humour someone about when they looked on the verge of... hitting some sort of revolution if saying yes or breaking down at saying no. "Time Lord? No," Ven shook his head.
As predicted, The Doctor's face fell for a moment, before looking contemplative again. "Yet, you were still in the time vortex - which is impossible, I might add, it shouldn't happen at all-" he paused for breath. "You're an interesting one, Ven."
"It's nothing special," Ven said suddenly.
"What isn't, hmm?"
Ven's naiveté showed through. Well, if he was going to hurt him, he would have done it by now, wouldn't he? He was more trusting than his two friends were, overall. "Stepping through time."
The Doctor's eyes positively glittered, and his face split into the most widest, broadest grin Ven had probably ever seen in his entire life. "So they do exist."
"What does?"
"People who step through time," the Doctor said thoughtfully, nodding away to himself, as he retraced through old pieces of information he'd once been given about a select few people who could move through time without use of a TARDIS or a vessel, yet by free will. "I never did quite believe it."
Ven looked questioning. "So, what's the difference between them and a Time Lord?" he paused, before rephrasing, "Well, really... what's a Time Lord?"
He pointed to himself. "Me."
"You," Ven replied dryly.
"Me," The Doctor insisted.
It was obvious he wasn't going to get any more information out of him, so Ven sighed shortly, shaking his head. There were levels to being cryptic but this seemed to beat the lot. It seemed the Doctor wasn't finished, as he said bluntly, "I travel through time and space in the TARDIS - that's Time And Relative Dimensions In Space, in case you were wondering - and can go just about anywhere. And," he paused, drawing a long breath. "I'm the last one."
"Oh." Ven looked apologetic. "Sorry about that. What were you doing here, anyway?"
"Saving the world and all that," the Doctor winked, standing upright and walking over to the TARDIS' console, leaning against it. "Trouble has a habit of following me."
Ven didn't immediately reply, instead finding his grip against the wall, and pushing himself to his feet. There was a clear height difference between him and the Doctor, but he didn't bother himself with it as he slowly made his way after him. "Tell me about it," he said sullenly.
"I think it's time I ask just who you are, Ven," The Doctor said cheerfully, pulling up a seat as he did so, swinging it slightly and looking over at him from where he was on the console.
"You probably won't know what it is," Ven attempted deterring him, his eyes trailing round the room until they wound back up on the Doctor again. "Then again you might," he said aloud. From what he'd heard, it didn't seem as though the Doctor was a liar. "A Keyblade master. One of the three under Master Xehanort."
For the second time in five minutes, the Doctor's eyes glittered - this time like stars, diamonds, of pure and utter interest. "Now there's something I thought was only just a legend. Keyblade masters! Keys that can open worlds - denies all physics, but I've been shown how some of it is done myself. Still trained in magic by Yen Sid, eh? Great man, Yen Sid, great man. Knew him before he turned to chasing that legend up. Never heard from him since. Has his grown that daft goatee he always wanted to have?"
Ven wasn't quite expecting that response from him. "Wait, back up." He halted, focusing more clearly on the Doctor. This guy couldn't be much older than forty, could he? Most likely less. How could he have known Yen Sid... before he started training masters? He was sure either Aqua or Terra had told him Yen Sid was well over a hundred... "How could you have- you're not-"
The Doctor grinned again. "Looks can be deceiving."
"So, Doctor... you're saying that... you're over a hundred, or something?"
"I am over that. Well over that. Nine hundred and still going strong."
"Right," Ven decided he didn't want to know how that one worked. "Well... looking pretty well off, there. And Yen Sid - yeah he did. He has one, anyway."
The brown-headed man nodded several times at Ven's response. He knew it would probably confuse most people with the Time Lord theory, even if Ven would be able to understand the concept. "You do have a Keyblade, don't you?"
The spiky haired blonde didn't reply, just eying him with caution. Even if the Keyblade couldn't be taken from him, and had dismissed itself automatically in the vortex, he wasn't co-operating with that request.
The Doctor just looked at him with a wise, withered look on his face. "Smart move. But there's no worrying, here. I wasn't asking to see it, even if it would be nice. Just curious."
For once, Ven actually believed someone when they said that. "I know."
Satisfied with that answer, the Doctor stood upright again, messing with the dials in front of him and pulling out his sonic screwdriver again, readjusting a few of the numbers as he did so. "So, where were you heading? I can take you if you'd like. It'd be a privilege."
Looking surprised, Ven lifted his hands and waved them in front of himself defensively. "No, it's alright, I can-"
"You don't look so bright. In the nicest way possible. Trust me, I know how hard the walls of the TARDIS are," the Doctor nodded insistently. "Where were you headed?"
Ven gave in. Of all the things he'd learned of this Time Lord so far, was that once he decided something, he'd see it through. "Back to my friends, Aqua and Terra, in Twilight Town. Era 1. They're probably wondering where I went by now - even if I can step across time," he added as an afterthought.
"One way trip coming right up," The Doctor said melodically, before pulling a lever on the console and causing the TARDIS to shake violently as it coughed and spluttered into life. It seemed to have at least recovered enough from its previous encounter.
The Doctor listened to it whir for a short while until it stopped shaking quite as violently, slowly making progress. "Your friends, huh?"
"Yeah. I spend a lot of time with them," Ven replied, not quite being able to contain a smile. "Do you have any good friends?"
There was a long sigh from the Doctor, and the silence drawled out. There were many over time, many that had left, many that had moved on, many that had passed away. That was the curse of the Time Lords. Recently, though... best get this over with, he figured. "Once. Until she... never mind," he shook his head, half turning away, as he sat against the console, somehow avoiding all the dials on the plate. "Her name was Rose."
As her name was said aloud, the sounds coming from the TARDIS faded, indicating it had stopped. Ven, though, was still lost in thought. There was something in the way he said 'Rose' - the very tenderness and caring of it - that said she had meant a lot to him. It reminded him of the way he said his friends' names - perhaps more like he said Aqua's name. His curiosity got the better of him. "What happened to her?"
The Doctor paused, gazing across at Ven with a sad expression on his face. "I lost her." He stayed like that for a few seconds, before in a blink of an eye, he was cheerful once again, all signs of moping eroded. "Anyway, it's time you got going to see Terra and... Aqua, was it?" he nodded to himself. "Off you go," he pointed in the direction of the door. "Oh, and before you say - the TARDIS is bigger on the inside than the outside," he half chuckled to himself.
Once again, Ven was caught off guard by the mood swing, and just responded with a slight nod. "Right. I suppose that's some Time Lord magic, or something?"
"Time Lord science," The Doctor corrected, before pointing in the direction of the door.
Ven smiled slightly, holding back a slight laugh. "Right." Spinning round, he spotted the door on the opposite wall, taking a step or two in its direction, and before he knew it he had taken hold of the handle. "Doctor?" he said slowly, turning back round to face him as he started to open the door, the shrill wind and rays of Twilight Town on the side of his face.
"Yes?"
"Thanks. It... was nice. I'll be more careful from now on."
"Good. Though don't be a stranger. Pop in for a chat, or two. Mr-I'm-Not-A-Time-Lord-But-Can-Do-Time-Lord-Things," he rambled again, before pausing, and saying in a more sincere voice, "And Ven?"
"What is it?"
"Treasure every moment you spend with your friends. Every moment. You'll never know when things will come to a... freeze," he slowed. "Let her know how you feel. I've been there. Don't make my mistake."
Don't let anyone else have my curse.
Ven seemed completely lost as to what he was getting at, until he realised, just pushing down the hint of embarrassment rising. "R-Right," he decided to say. "I will."
And with that, he left the TARDIS through the wooden doors, to find himself walking away from a blue 1950's London police box that no one noticed, but seemed too out of place on the sunset road to be natural. It was true, though - that it was bigger on the inside.
As Ven contemplated that thought, the engines whirred, the siren flashed, and the box disappeared slowly out of existence into the vortex.
And Ven knew what to do, as he ran the distance along the footpath dirt road, a determined look on his face, taking the Doctor's words to heart. He was on his way back to the house when a melody reached his ears, a familiar one. One that he'd placed on his cell phone to represent Aqua. The sounds of the sea.
"Aqua?" Ven questioned, before half recoiling from the phone in the outburst of 'Where have you been?!' from the other end. "Yeah, I know. I'm sorry, I couldn't... well... listen," Ven said back to her, the adrenaline pounding in his chest. He didn't know when they would see each other again. The battle they had worked for could be tomorrow. He wanted her to know. "There's something I have to tell you..."
AFTERWORD
.. yeah, this is random. Written in three and a half hours, ish. I'm sure a lot of the Kingdom Hearts fandom knows about Ven being like Roxas and such - and I'm pretty sure someone had an icon of Ven with 'time lord' on the bottom. It's turned into a private joke thing between me and my friend lately, so... yeah, this came out. I actually like it a lot though. I think the Doctor and Ven would get on well.
So, Ven's personality, again, is entirely up to debate. So please don't judge me when Birth By Sleep is actually released. Oh yeah, and unless Square reads my mind, VEN CANNONT TIME SHIFT. This is totally made up for fic purposes. As for the Doctor Who side, it would take place a few weeks before picking up Martha, when the Doctor is fully concentrating on his loss of Rose and trying to find his place, when he's doing his 'soul searching'.
HAPPY SWEET SIXTEEN, CANDACE :3
