Twitter - what is it good for?

I've read the introduction to Twitter, and had a think as to whether it would be useful to me, but I can't see it.

I can see how, for some people it might be useful to have RSS-style updates to their phone, for journalists and the like, but for "normal" people? The website says:
Why? Because even basic updates are meaningful to family members, ( Read more... )

I do not know if this will help you or not. I joined twitter a little over a month ago, I have text messages each month I am paying for and not using, and joining twitter has actually brought me up to close to half my allotted monthly usage. (I realize this fact may be irrelevant, but added it anyway)

I do like knowing what is going on with friends. Whether they have a funny story to relate, or even a sad/scary one. I like to offer support when I can, even if it is only via text. For a lot of us, that is all we have most of the time anyway. This is just a bit more convenient, if we both are not at our computers.

With that said, I just found a feature two days ago that stops twitter from sending me messages during the hours I normally sleep. That means if I want to know what was said then, I will need to log into the site. I am okay with this, because I learned that friends can twitter all hours of the night and sometimes I need sleep more than I need to be reading text messages. I use my phone as a back-up alarm. So turning it to silent is not an option.

Before I found that turn off a certain hours feature, I was considering turning it off completely. I doubt I could have really brought myself to really do so, however, because I like to be connected to my friends. I need that connection and I get it every way I can, since I seem to find it harder and harder to be logged into the kingdom these days.

Like I said, I don't know if this will help you make a decision. Mostly this is my pros and cons. I do like being able to know how my friends are. And being able to share things from my life too! However, I cannot think of anyone who needs to know I ate soup, unless it was the best thing I ever ate, and wanted to share that fact.

Good luck and if you do sign up, look me up: theonlypinklady

ok, you've not persuaded me one way or the other, so it's still under consideration.

If someone has a funny story to relate, I'm not sure it can be accomplished within 140 characters.
Being able to send a quick hug via text to something that went wrong and was texted to me might be useful though. I'll continue thinking about it
