serendipitous encounters
kaisoo (jongin/kyungsoo).
pg.
au. romance. humor.
oneshot/~5100w.

This is either fate, or really bad luck. Or maybe, in Do Kyungsoo's case, both.

a/n: for ruined_reverie's prompt! Ah, this prompt is cute ;; as always, borderline pg-13 for like... the use of the word 'hell' but yeah, this is pretty pg.

It's a quarter to nine in the morning. Kyungsoo lets out puff of air, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he counts the number of blue cars passing by. One, two, three... can that be considered blue? It looked more teal. Three and a half?

He's been waiting for almost an hour now, and the cold mixed with his anxiety is driving him more or less insane.

He checks his watch again. 8:47 AM. The wait is killing him, if not mentally, then physically. They could have at least had the decency to tell Kyungsoo that he'd be waiting out in the cold before the job interview; he would've brought a jacket in that case.

Honestly, at this rate, all he'll be is a icicle in a really nice suit.

The door to the building opens, and Kyungsoo and all the other job applicants look towards the woman with the clipboard eagerly, hoping it is their turn to be rescued from this freezing hell. Kyungsoo holds his breath as he watches the woman scan the list for the next person, and then announces...

"Kim Jongdae."

Kyungsoo deflates in one long breath, and listens as the others waiting all grumble. A man with a spectacular facial structure - Kyungsoo cannot lie about that - hops out of line with a high, "Yippee!" and practically skips into the warm building as everyone glares daggers at him.

And thus, the waiting ensues once more.

It's 8:54 AM when Kyungsoo checks his watch for the umpteenth time. He sighs and leans his head against the brick wall and thinks about all he has to do today after the interview. There's no more milk at the dorm, and Sehun always needs his milk, so Kyungsoo knows he'll have to stop by the store. Baekhyun texted him an hour ago telling him they're out of shampoo too, and because Baekhyun has "special hair with special needs," he'll have to stop by a beauty store to pick up Baekhyun's "special" fifty dollar shampoo.

Kyungsoo mentally makes a reminder to get the fifty dollars back from Baekhyun after he buys the shampoo.

It would have been nice if someone had told Kyungsoo way back then that, had he chosen a different major than music, he would have been able to secure a nice, long-lasting job and perhaps have a well-decorated apartment of his own as well. Instead of bouncing from job-to-job and sharing an apartment with two so-called friends who never shop for themselves unless it's food.

Okay, so maybe they did tell Kyungsoo and he just didn't want to listen them. After all, music was - is - where his heart belongs, and he wasn't about to let The Man tell him otherwise.

Still, maybe The Man had a point. It really wasn't fun waiting line after line for job interviews, most of which he is rejected because no big business firm wants to take a music major.

He only hopes that a publishing firm is more lenient.

Kyungsoo checks his watch again - time is money, after all - and it is now 8:58 AM. He's about to chuck his watch into oncoming traffic when he notices a pair of eyes watching him from the other side of the street. At first, he wonders if the stranger knows him, but he doesn't look familiar to Kyungsoo.

It starts to get creepy after another thirty seconds pass and the stranger continues starring. Kyungsoo hopes he doesn't have a stalker on his tail, because he does not have time for that. Luckily, the stranger seems to snap out of whatever reverie he was in and starts walking the other way and into the building across from them.

That was weird.

Kyungsoo finds himself staring at the door the mysterious(ly creepy) stranger went into until he hears his name being called. He almost jumps and sprints straight into the building, but manages to stay relatively calm as he strolls through the door, mentally cheering.

Sweet Jesus, thank the Lord for letting mankind create the heater.

Before he can relish in the welcoming warmth, he is ushered into a room with few colors and many clippings of writing hanging on the walls. It's very... expected.

"Hello, you must be Do Kyungsoo. I'm Junmyeon, an editor here at Seoul Printing and Publishing." Kyungsoo is taken back by how handsome - and young-looking for someone in his position - the man is. "Please, take a seat." Junmyeon motions towards the seat in front of him, and Kyungsoo sits down obediently.

"So tell me about yourself, Kyungsoo."

Damn. Kyungsoo hates these types of interviews, where the interviewer lets Kyungsoo take the reigns and honestly Kyungsoo never knows where he goes with these sort of interview. There are a lot of things he could talk about - the fact that he gets less exercise than recommended weekly, that he secretly sneaks low fat milk to Sehun, that sometimes he dilutes Baekhyun's shampoo with his own to save them money. So many sins, so little time.

So for now, he sticks with, "I'm fast and easy-to-adapt to all sorts of work environments, so I hope you hire me." It's short but simple, and if he goes on any longer, he's bound to say something he does not want to say.

Junmyeon blinks, waiting for more. Kyungsoo stares back, unwilling to go any further. The editor frowns and takes notes, and Kyungsoo sighs. Another job opportunity lost at the hands of a bad interview.

"Right, well, we'll get in contact with you in about a week then, Kyungsoo. It was nice meeting you," Junmyeon says, standing up and sticking out his right hand. Kyungsoo takes it dejectedly, knowing this will be the last time they meet.

Really, why couldn't Junmyeon just ask him questions about his qualifications instead? Kyungsoo had those answers memorized by heart, and he'd definitely have the job if that were the case.

Kyungsoo leaves feeling colder than before, mumbling to himself that maybe it would have been better if he were an icicle. Icicles don't have to worry about bills and groceries and college loans...

As if his day weren't bad enough, the store Kyungsoo usually shops at for Sehun's milk and all his other groceries is closed today. He cusses the store out under his breath, mumbling, "Why the hell are they closed, it's not even a holiday," like a mad man. He garners a couple of stares from passersby, but Kyungsoo is too angry to care.

He buys Baekhyun's shampoo after that (and cringes when he sees the price, as he does every time he goes out to buy it). When he exits the beauty shop, holding a pink bag with flowers on it that erases all that is left of Kyungsoo's dignity for the day, he notices a new store down the road.

A goofy smile spreads across his lips as he sees the familiar bright vegetable stickers and a red OPEN sign flashing at the front. It's a grocery store.

Things are finally looking up for Kyungsoo. Kind of. If a grocery store means anything significant, which, in Kyungsoo's case, can be.

He enters and is greeted by a male worker, to which he nods politely before making his way to the dairy section.

To some, Kyungsoo may look like an innocent, young man with no hidden agendas. But to those who know the true inner workings of his mind, that is not the case. Kyungsoo looks around once before quietly ripping off the label of a whole milk bottle with that of a 2% milk bottle. Sehun never really notices, and it's cheaper.

Does he feel guilty that some poor soul looking for 2% milk will actually be getting whole milk instead? A little. But that guilt is washed over by the money he saved switching the two.

Kyungsoo is ready to buy his milk when he sees, out of the corner of his eye, a dark figure. He peeks over as subtly as he can to further examine the man who just witnessed him switch the milk labels. The man is wearing a long, dark coat, his hair slicked back. And damn, does he have a nice facial structure... Not that Kyungsoo is gawking or anything.

After another moment of 'subtle staring,' it hits Kyungsoo like a gallon of whole milk. He takes a slow step back to reconfirm his theory, and flinches when he sees he's right. It's him, the man from across the street!

Kyungsoo whips out his watch to check the time - 10:06 AM - and tries calculating the chances that he'd see the man he saw across the street again in a store this time, almost an hour later.

Alas, Kyungsoo was never great with math in school, so he is unable to calculate that probability and just settles with that is probably very unlikely.

Stay calm, Kyungsoo. Just buy your milk and act as if he never saw anything, Kyungsoo tells himself as he slowly makes his way to the cashier. He finds himself glancing back to see if the man is still there, and breathing out a sigh of relief when he sees he's gone. He pays for the milk hurriedly and leaves without another look back.

That was weird.

Still jobless with many bills to pay - Kyungsoo's been trying to avoid them piling up on the kitchen counter - Kyungsoo continues his hunt for a new job the next day. He's waiting in line to talk to a coffee shop manager (this was his last choice, honestly; he does not want to work in a place where college students buy one cup of coffee then sit around for hours using wifi... and no, he does not know that happens because he used to do that himself) when he feels his phone vibrate in his pocket.

Kyungsoo contemplates letting it go to voicemail, assuming it's Sehun or Baekhyun asking for something, but he grudgingly takes his phone out anyway. His eyebrows crease when he sees it's an unfamiliar number. After taking a short two seconds contemplating if he should answer it, he presses 'Accept' and asks, "Hello?"

"Hello, Do Kyungsoo. I am calling from Seoul Printing and Publishing to tell you you have been hired. Please report to the headquarters by noon today to receive your briefing."

Kyungsoo's eyes widen. "Y-Yes, of course!" he stammers out, and starts bowing as if the person on the other line could see him. "Thank you so much! I'll be on time!" There's a click on the other side, and Kyungsoo almost jumps in joy.

However, someone clears his throat behind Kyungsoo and Kyungsoo realizes he's next in line. Excited, Kyungsoo orders himself a coffee and a muffin to celebrate with, ignoring the looks he gets for the big grin on his face.

I can't believe I got the job, Kyungsoo thinks to himself as he waits for his order. He's so busy celebrating his odd victory that he doesn't notice the tall, dark, and handsome man in the corner, watching him with a small smile on his face.

Kyungsoo loiters outside the building. It's a half past eleven. He contemplates entering early, but he doesn't want to seem desperate or anything. No, if anything, he'll be right on time, and they will all be in awe over his impeccable timing. Yes, it sounds like a plan.

...

Okay, waiting is really boring. Kyungsoo checks his watch again, and barely a minute has passed. He plays with the cup of coffee in his hand, lukewarm now and almost gone. As he moves to take a sip, he almost spills some coffee on his jacket when he sees a familiar face pass by.

IT'S YOU, Kyungsoo thinks, eyes widening as the stranger walks by. He doesn't seem to notice Kyungsoo, too busy talking on his phone and getting past the crowds of pedestrians. Kyungsoo seriously begins to wonder if this is a bad case of stalking, although whether or not it's intentional is still questionable.

Who the hell are you? What are you doing here? Where are you going? Kyungsoo's eyes are wide, staring at the stranger. Of course, right now, it looks like he's doing the stalking, the way he watches the stranger. Why do you keep showing up?!

He holds his breath as he watches the stranger turn around the corner, his long coat drifting behind.

"That was weird," Kyungsoo mumbles aloud, ignoring the stare he recieves from the janitor taking out the trash, who probably thinks Kyungsoo is crazy now.

He's not exactly wrong.

It is exactly 11:59 AM when Kyungsoo walks through the front door of the building. He approaches the front desk, head held high. The lady at the front barely spares him a second glance before directing him to the fifth floor.

Kyungsoo takes the elevator up. He's humming to the holiday music when the elevator stops on the third floor, and the doors open up. In steps Junmyeon from Kyungsoo's interview yesterday.

"Oh, Kyungsoo. You're right on time," he says with a smile.

"Hi, Junmyeon," Kyungsoo replies with a polite bow. "Yes, I didn't want to be late on my first day. And can I just thank you for choosing me," he says earnestly.

"No problem," Junmyeon responds with a chuckle. "But it wasn't just me. Someone else asked that you be hired, although they won't tell me who." If Kyungsoo didn't know better, he'd say Junmyeon is almost a little annoyed that he doesn't know who.

"Oh, well, still. Thank you for giving me the chance to work here. I really appreciate it," Kyungsoo repeats, smiling awkwardly. Junmyeon returns the gesture, and the rest of the elevator ride is fairly quiet.

When they reach the fifth floor, Kyungsoo steps out and turns to Junmyeon. "Nice to see you, Junmyeon. Thank you again," he says, bowing.

Junmyeon nods. "Of course. Good luck, Kyungsoo. I hope to see you around."

Kyungsoo smiles, then walks off to meet his new boss.

The briefing went fairly well. His new boss - a tiny man named Minseok who is very cute and also young-looking, like Junmyeon - is friendly, so Kyungsoo doesn't think he'll have a hard time working here. Minseok tells him the basics of what working on floor five means ("We go over the children's books, and your job is to mainly send out letters and get the word out. You know, publicity. It's pretty easy enough."), and goes over their daily routine.

Kyungsoo starts work right after, given his own little cubicle in the corner of the office. It's bland, but Kyungsoo doesn't care - it's his and he finally has a job! He can even splurge on groceries today, buying brand name products instead of the domestic ones he usually gets. And maybe even whole milk for Sehun. Who knows? The possibilities are endless!

Busy taking pictures of his new cubicle to share on Instagram (he just reached four hundred followers the other day, too! Because hey, when you're jobless, you have the time to take many pictures to share with strangers), he fails to notice the new arrival on his floor, who garners a lot of low murmurs and stares from his new co-workers.

He even snaps a picture of said "new arrival" as he takes photos of the office, but he's too busy captioning it with LOOK!!!!!! and an array of emoticons that he doesn't even notice that his stranger is in the building.

(And watching him from Minseok's office with a sly grin. Not creepy at all, really.)

"He's looking at you."

Kyungsoo blinks, looking up from the work he finally got started on after a good ten minutes of taking pictures for Instagram. There's a head popping up over his cubicle, and Kyungsoo thinks he looks familiar, but he can't put a name to the face yet.

"He's looking at you," he repeats, and Kyungsoo looks around to see what his co-worker is talking about, but he can't see anything out of the ordinary.

"What?" he asks with a frown.

"The dude who just walked in who everyone's whispering loudly about - he's looking at you." The man seems to be getting furstrated with Kyungsoo's obliviousness.

"Who?"

"Oh my gosh, him!" Now he's pointing to Minseok's office, but when Kyungsoo turns to look, no one's there.

"Uh..."

"Damn it, what the hell!" his co-worker cusses. "He was just there! Ugh."

Kyungsoo stares. It's just his luck he gets placed by a crazy guy at his new job.

"Well, the name's Jongdae," the guy sighs. "I was hired yesterday, so I'm new too. I think I remember you, too? You were waiting outside?"

Kyungsoo nods. "Yeah, I remember you, too." The guy Kyungsoo cussed out in his mind for getting called on before him, although Kyungsoo won't say that aloud, of course.

"What's your name, big eyes?"

Not the best way to start a friendship, Kyungsoo notes, but it's not like he hasn't heard it before. At first, that was all Sehun would call him. "Kyungsoo," he replies.

"Well, it'll be fun working with you, Kyungsoo," Jongdae says with a grin that almost makes Kyungsoo shiver. It sounds more like a threat than anything else. Jongdae disappears behind the wall after that, and Kyungsoo lets out a breath of relief.

He sneaks a peek over at Minseok's office before returning to his work.

The next few days of work are fine. Jongdae pops his head over sometimes, most of the time to say something he thinks is funny. Kyungsoo would laugh just so he'd go away faster.

Kyungsoo works hard and efficiently, and is praised by Minseok for being such a good worker. He's proud of his job so far.

One day, on his lunch break, he steps into the floor's kitchen to grab a cup of coffee when he freezes at the door.

What the hell, Kyungsoo thinks as his eyes meet his stranger's. Why is he in here?! THIS IS NO COINCIDENCE ANYMORE! ALERT, ALERT, STALKER! He thinks his stranger is about to talk when, instead, he just smirks and throws his cup into the trash before strolling out of there as if he owns the place.

Kyungsoo watches him, an incredulous look on his face. Who the hell are you?

He goes to Minseok to ask who this guy is - if it's not a worker, he plans to call security as soon as possible - when, just his luck, guess who's in Minseok's office?

"Oh, Kyungsoo? Do you have a question?" Minseok asks innocently, but all Kyungsoo can see is that gigantic smirk on his stranger's face. And damn, is he more attractive up close than Kyungsoo would have liked.

"N-No, I was just... passing by..." he mumbles, high-tailing it out of there afterwards. He practically runs back to his cubicle, where he keeps his head low as he finishes up his work for the day.

What the hell is going on?

It happens again and again after that. Kyungsoo runs into the stranger (who is still nameless, as Kyungsoo is a bit afraid to ask Minseok who he is, because who knows what dangers this man may wreak) on several different occasions, and it's starting to freak Kyungsoo out.

One time, he's grabbing the mail Minseok asked him to pick up from the second floor when, just his luck, he drops the mail by running into someone. And guess who that someone is? Yeah, a certain stranger he sees too often to be called that anymore.

And the jerk doesn't even have the kindness to help him pick up the letters. He just keeps walking, accompanied by unfamiliar men. Kyungsoo cusses at him under his breath before returning to the fifth level to give the mail to Minseok.

Another time, during his lunch break, he's eating in the kitchen with Jongdae - who is not as odd as Kyungsoo originally thought him to be, although it turns out he enjoys pulling pranks on his co-workers a lot - when the stranger enters the room. Kyungsoo stares at him the whole time, hoping to break him and get the stranger to talk to him.

It doesn't work. His stranger goes on to make his coffee, and he even has the guts to ask Jongdae if he knows where the sugar is. Jongdae shows him the cabinet before excusing himself to the restroom, leaving Kyungsoo alone with the stranger.

Kyungsoo eats slowly after that. He wants to say something - more like yell something - to get this stranger's attention, but he's interrupted by a frantic phone call by Sehun.

"HOW DO I TURN OFF THE OVEN?!" the younger practically screeches into the phone.

Kyungsoo frowns. "Wait, what-"

"OVEN. OFF. HOW. HURRY."

"I told you to never go into the kitchen when I'm not-"

"KYUNGSOO!"

"JUST TURN IT COUNTER-CLOCKWISE!"

"TURN WHAT?!"

"THE KNOB YOU TURNED IT ON WITH, WHAT ELSE?!

There's a brief moment of silence before Sehun says, "Oh."

"Why are you using the oven anyway?" Kyungsoo asks with a groan.

"Baking a cake for Luhannie. Gotta go now. See you later, Kyungsoo!" Then there's a dial tone, and Kyungsoo groans. Roommates.

When he looks up, the stranger is gone. He slams his head onto the table.

(And when Jongdae finally returns, he helpfully tells Kyungsoo, "You know that guy who was in here earlier? He was the one staring at you that first day. Told you I'm not crazy." And he's right - Jongdae's not crazy.

Kyungsoo is.)

Perhaps the strangest time Kyungsoo runs into the stranger is not at work, but at the theater. He attends a performance of Swan Lake with Sehun, who drags him because his 'Luhannie' is apparently in it, and he doesn't want to go alone. Baekhyun somehow talked himself out of it, but Kyungsoo is not as fortunate.

It's intermission, and Kyungsoo steps out to stretch his legs when he sees him.

"Oh my gosh," he breathes, apparently too loud as well, since his stranger looks at him right at that moment. He at least has the nerve to look surprised as well. Kyungsoo is about to start cussing when Sehun pops up behind him.

"Come on, Kyungsoo. The show's about to continue," he urges, pulling him back into the theater. Kyungsoo strains to look back at his stranger, but he's long gone.

About a month has passed since Kyungsoo first got his job at Seoul Printing and Publishing. He's seen his stranger more times than he can count (just kidding, he counted - it's now at 34 times), and he's about to go insane.

Kyungsoo is in the elevator right now, busy mumbling angry cuss words under his breath about his particular stranger today. It's been a long day, with the holidays nearing even closer, calling for more publicity than ever for the children's book. It doesn't help that his stranger, once again, talked to Jongdae instead of him in the kitchen today to ask how to change the coffee filter.

Jongdae doesn't even drink coffee! he screeches mentally.

He doesn't even notice when someone else steps into the elevator.

It's the ding that sounds when the elevator touches the first floor that snaps Kyungsoo back to reality, just in time to hear an, "After you," by a voice he's familiarized himself with. His eyes widen as he turns to see, but of course, his stranger standing opposite of him, smirking.

Kyungsoo gapes. He can't help it - he gapes. He steps out without thinking, and his stranger follows after. Kyungsoo stops outside the elevator, not knowing what to say.

But he doesn't have to say anything, because his stranger is already walking away.

His stranger glances back at him (and has the audacity to grin, that bastard) as he leaves the building, and Kyungsoo's fists curl into a ball in frustration.

Enough is enough. Kyungsoo has to stop this nonsense, and thankfully, he has a plan.

There's a knock at the door, and Kyungsoo barely has the time to look up to see who it is before a familiar book lands on his desk.

"I got your transcript."

"I see," Kyungsoo says, amusement laced into his voice as he looks up to see the face he has come to know so well.

"And I am not a stalker, by the way," Jongin says, crossing his arms, but there's a grin playing his lips that Kyungsoo would love to see.

"No, you just show up everywhere I am," Kyungsoo replies with a nod. Inside, though, he's secretly joyed at the fact that they're finally talking. He gives himself a mental pat on the back that his plan worked on at least a bare, minimum level: getting Jongin (a.k.a. his stranger) to talk to him.

Jongin snorts. "It's pure chance."

"Right. Because what were the odds that you'd also show up to a performance of Swan Lake."

"I'll have you know I used to take ballet," Jongin defends, but Kyungsoo just rolls his eyes. Sure, because that's the reason.

"You're not here to explain your uncanny stalking habits, Mister Kim," Kyungsoo says, smirking at the way Jongin's nose scrunches at the sound of his business name.

"So you know who I am," he mumbles, and Kyungsoo can't help but smile at how puppy-like Jongin looks.

"Well, you are the son of the owner of this company. I'd figure it out sooner or later," Kyungsoo replies. It's sooner, rather than later, because Kyungsoo asked around for an entire day to see if anyone knew a 'tall, tan, infuriating-when-he-just-looks-at-you' man, and all signs pointed towards the company's head figure's one and only beloved son.

And apparently, said beloved son returned to Seoul this year from his studies as well, now on internship at a nearby dance academy. (Okay, so maybe Kyungsoo actually Googled that last part; office gossip only reveals so much.)

"Hmm, well, I don't think your book is going to be published any time soon," he says, and Kyungsoo can't help but chuckle. Obviously he has no intentions for that to happen anyway. He just needed a way to get Mr. Tall-Tan-and-Infuriating to talk to him, and what better way than to sneak it into the pile of transcripts and hopes that someone passes it along to Jongin (after all, he put a note on top asking for said boy to read it specifically).

"Really?" he asks, biting back anymore giggles. Talking with the stranger he's been seeing so often is a lot more fun than he expected. "And why not?"

"'How to Approach that Weird Guy You See Everywhere,' a short story by Do Kyungsoo," Jongin reads aloud, as if the title is self-explanatory, and Kyungsoo smiles proudly.

"Complete with illustrations," he points out.

Jongin snorts. "They're doodles, practically. Really bad doodles."

Kyungsoo can't really argue; he had Sehun draw them for him, in return for kimchi fried rice for dinner. And Sehun never seemed to get past a first-grade standard of drawing, which included stick figures and coloring outside the lines.

"I just don't think it's elaborate enough," Jongin finally answers, and Kyungsoo looks up at him curiously.

"Really?" he deadpans.

"Yes, but it's terribly anticlimactic. Ending it off with a cliffhanger like that, and with no promises for a sequel? Tsk, it's like you don't know anything about the publishing business." Now Jongin is just being sassy, and Kyungsoo scorns himself for actually laughing at it.

"As if you know anything yourself," he replies with a laugh.

"I do, actually. I know enough to tell you that your book needs a better ending."

"Oh yeah, and what do you recommend it should end with?" But Kyungsoo knows well what it should end with, and he knows Jongin knows too, the way he begins inching closer and closer.

"A kiss," Jongin breathes. Kyungsoo watches as Jongin leans in, eyes wide now. All of his previous arrogance has faded behind the intense, up-close stare of Jongin. Kyungsoo jerks back last minute, and Jongin ends up brushing his lips against Kyungsoo's cheek instead.

"Uh, don't you think that's a little too sudden for this book?" he asks awkwardly, and Jongin pulls back to grin at Kyungsoo (although there's still a tinge of disappointment in his eyes).

"Then what do you suggest be the ending?" Jongin asks, tilting his head to the side.

"Maybe... maybe a date instead?" Kyungsoo suggests hesitantly. "And then... a kiss... eventually..." he adds that last part with a flush on his cheeks. It frustrates him to no end how flustered Jongin makes him.

"Can't we just switch them around?" Jongin asks, pouting. Kyungsoo glares at him, and Jongin bursts out laughing.

"Nope," he says, crossing his arms. When he sees Jongin's face fall, he regains a little of his confidence because, hey, if Jongin really likes him that much, then what Kyungsoo's about to say isn't as embarrassing. "Kisses are for the sequel," he informs him, smiling when Jongin's face lights up. "I already have it planned out and everything. It's going to be titled, 'How that Weird Stranger Turned Into My Still-Weird Boyfriend.'"

"We'll work on your titles later," Jongin laughs. "Let's just work on that boyfriend part for now."

Kyungsoo grins. He likes the sound of that.
