Simon showed up. He already had a job in the clinic, and wasn't this the same woman who threatened to burn his face off for trying to remove his patient's costume?
He'd been with Serenity too long. His life lacked that special element that came with living on handshaking basis with certain destruction.
Simon sighed. "I guess I can't wriggle out of it now," he said. "The medicine I learned on Osiris is hundreds of years beyond anything you people have here...but I'll manage."
He hesitated. "What I really need to talk to you about is River, if I can convince her to come."
"River is smart," he started, "smarter than I am, possibly smarter than anyone on the base. Really, she's the one who should be teaching, but I think she'd like to learn about Earth That Was..."
"River had some kind of psychic aptitude. The government lured her to the Academy and they...experimented on her brain. It made her...she's a little crazy now, in addition to being able to read minds." The last sentence came out in one rushed breath.
"What kind of classes would you like to enroll her in? I can't speak for the other teachers, but I'd be happy to have her in my class. Right now I'm teaching general studies and psych."
"I really need to find her first," Simon said, only a little embarrassed. "I'm hoping that if she's interested in her studies she won't disappear off into the base. I know she'd like psychology," though really, handing her more mind-weapons was probably a terrible idea, "history...she'd be bored by anything but the most ridiculous level of mathematics you can throw at her. She's an accomplished fighter already, but..." Simon hesitated, "she loves to dance."
"Thank you," Simon said, "for giving her an oppurtunity as well as me. With all the insane things that keep happening around here, it would be a relief to the doctors if everyone had at least the ability to keep each other alive."
