WHO: Captain Kirk and whoever wants to bother him.
WHERE: The holodeck.
WHAT: Angst.

Technically, this technology was from his future, which raised certain risks for using it. But, Kirk told himself, he wasn't going to take it apart or study it. He just wanted it to give her back for a while.

Sulu had gone out looking for something to do. He'd found a door labeled "Holodeck" and curiously stepped through it.

To find himself on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, circa 2265. For a moment he could only stare in amazement and he took a few halting steps forward. There was his spot at the helm, Chekov's next to him at navigation... Uhura's post at communications. Spock's science panel. Then he noticed Captain Kirk, sitting in the captain's chair. Right where he belonged. The uniform, the hair, the look... it was as if someone had put Sulu down in the past.

"Captain... what is this?"

"A bit of technology from the Federation's future, apparently," he said. "Not a good idea to even dabble with it, I know, but... I couldn't resist, and hopefully there'll be no harm done." Kirk smiled. "Amazing, isn't it Mr. Sulu? An absolutely... perfect illusion. I daresay we could take this thing to Antares right now if we wanted."

Sulu nodded, still in a bit of a daze. He walked over to his old position at helm and slid into the seat. He remembered this like it was yesterday.

"We probably could, at that."

He tentatively nudged the helm control forward, bringing the "ship" to one quarter impulse. He felt the slight thrum of the engines through the deck plating and starfield on the viewscreen began to shift ever so slightly. He laughed out loud, swiveling to grin at Kirk.

"This is amazing. And it certainly isn't from my own time."

Kirk threw up his hands. "Well, now you've gone and done it, Mr. Sulu. Now, when I return home the entire course of history is going to be changed because you told me the Federation won't have hologram technology in the next few decades. With our luck, the human race will be wiped out. I hope you're happy." He laughed. He hadn't felt this good since arriving here.

Sulu took on a look of mock horror, "Captain, no! Surely there must be something I can do to prevent such a catastrophe!"

Unable to hold a straight face, he laughed, leaning on his control panel. "I love this ship..." He spoke without thinking, "Pity about what happened over Genesis."

"Yes, there'll never be another like her..." Kirk mused, running his hand over his armrest, Sulu's comment not really sinking in. "Genesis, don't think I remember that one... unless that was when McCoy had to- no, that was Capella Four. What happened over Genesis?"

"Well, it's from your future, sir. I can tell you if you like."

Sulu settled back with an apprehensive look, hands folded.

Dammit, it was Edith all over again. Something bad was going to happen to someone he loved, he knew it, he could damn well stop it if he told Sulu yes, go ahead, but...

But a man shouldn't live his own life like that. Especially not a Captain. Captain's didn't take action based on insider information about destiny. They made their own, and lived with the consequences.

"No... no thank you, Mr. Sulu. I'm sure I'll find out, one day."

Sulu nodded, "Of course sir. I wish you the best of luck. Just remember that we're behind you, all the way." He grinned. Same old Kirk.
