I break into your house to talk about fanfiction and ramble about my character’s original concept

Dec 23, 2021 09:10

So this will be a brief explanation of how my characters came to be and what’s the source/setting they’re based on. All this buffoonery began the moment I became hyperfixated on Mobius Noir Files (Noir), a Sonic fanfiction set in an alternative universe in the 1940’s. The plot of this fanfiction is complicated and broad: Chaotics, or the furries as I say when I explain the plot to strangers, are considered second class citizens, property even.

I was going to try and describe the plot, but the moment I proofread the paragraph I realized I was writing nonsense so I’m just going to include the fanfic summary here:

“Owners murdered, Shadow uses his unwanted connections with the Jackal Squad along with the Chaotic Employment Initiative to get into the SSPD, determined to solve their case. Twenty years later, he's a Detective Chief Inspector assigned his own Junior, but the path to success has been anything but smooth. Immovably tied to the Squad through favours, he's still firmly stuck in Infinite's clawed grasp long after his debt has been repaid, and now risks every immoral decision he's made being exposed by an unsuspecting Junior Detective.”

There are a couple of keywords here that I will use often through these rants so I will try to be brief. Chaotics are what a common pleb would refer to as a furry, a sonic character styled furry. In this universe chaotics are considered second class citizens, in fact many of them are considered property. Here’s where the word owner and pet comes into play: a human that legally owns a chaotic is the owner and subsequently the chaotic is referred to as the pet. Then there’s the Jackal Squad, which is basically the big name mafia of the city, conformed uniquely by chaotics, mostly jackals, their hideout is an old rundown house they refer to as The Den.

The main characters in this story are Shadow who is a totally not gay detective, Sonic who is a junior detective and is just doing his best, and Infinite who is the leader of the Jackal Squad and totally not Shadow’s boyfriend. There’re many side characters who play important roles in the fic, but I am actually entirely sure these three are the main ones.

I’m not sure why I focused so much on explaining the plot when I’m just gonna write about my characters who aren’t canon to the fic, I just want to give the imaginary reader a good mental image when it comes to this universe. Keyword, THERE’S A LOT OF CHAOTIC ABUSE AND EXPLOITATION. Not much of a keyword actually, more of a warning? Just imagine fucked up shit abusive assholes do to minorities and domestic animals and it happens in this universe. Inequality and speciesism? Oh yes. Chaotics fighting to the death for humans to bet on the winner? Indeed. Chaotics breeding rings with the purpose of selling pups as pets? Absolutely!

So anyways, this is where I chose to make a home for my new daydreams and characters to flourish :)

Quo and Dante are the protagonists in my Noir daydreams. Quo is my friend Quonit’s avatar, they’re a fox and they use it for every fandom we’ve inserted ourselves into. Dante is my Noir OC, he started as a general sonic selfinsert (that’s why he has my irl name) but I felt more comfortable with him being his own person. I’ll include some of his concept art because it’s pretty funny how much he’s changed.

Apparently he was originally called Error (my online name) I had forgotten lmao

He sure has come a long way from then I was just starting to learn how to draw in the sonic artstyle lmao

Dante was originally supposed to be a mobian who hated humans and had an unrequited crush on Amy Rose in the Sonic Adventure Universe.

Quo is a masculine presenting chaotic in his late 30’s/early 40’s who works as a journalist for the local press, first chaotic journalist in the city. He takes pride in his job and will take any opportunity for an interview he can get. Dante is a 16 year old chaotic, an ambiguous canine if you will. He used to be owned by humans as a pup until he was eventually abandoned in his early teens. That’s when he was found by Quo and eventually adopted as his son.

Probably one of the first doodles I made of the two of them. That’s it, that’s their relationship lol.

Dante really despised wearing clothes the first couple of years living with Quo, the textures felt unbearable to the newly freed chaotic who had been naked his whole life.

Dante didn’t know how to read when he first met Quo but the fox took time to teach him.

It was just the two of them for quite a while until Ollie made her first appearance. Just as the other two, she wasn’t created specifically for my Noir daydreams but she eventually became a big part of them. She was supposed to be a new attempt of a genderless selfinsert I would feel comfortable enough to project myself onto, but my brain doesn’t appreciate commitment so she became her own character. She’s Dante’s biological sister and littermate, and while they grew up separately and unaware of each other, they managed to reunite in their teenage years.

Ollie’s first concept art, she was always a cutie 💕

Not even a week after her conception and I had a Noir insert ready. She wears a different colored dresses I was just limited in the colors I had at my hand.

Tangent and Skelter ironically officially appeared in my Noir daydreams around the same time: Ironic because they absolutely despise each other. I think Tangent popped up first if I'm correct, I already had a vague concept of a wolf character with Memphis Tennessee's voice (Chase Young from the sonic fandubs) but had no context to use him for.I’m pretty sure I was laying on the floor and the idea of Ollie having been adopted by a wolf family suddenly popped into my head, and I was like “SHIT I CAN FINALLY USE THE WOLF BOY I CALL TANGENT”, and that’s how Tangent became her older brother. I think at some point I thought it’d be a funny gag if Ollie didn’t know she was adopted despite clearly not being a wolf, but I scrapped that when I made the conscious choice of not making her an idiot.

While still a funny idea, I’m glad I went for a more put together and calm, but sarcastic personality for her instead of wacky funny. It just fits her nicer :’D

I think the reason I made Skelter was to add balance to Ollie’s loneliness. I was sort of opposed to having Ollie and Dante meet and find out they’re siblings in the beginning, thinking it would be too dumb or “too much of a coincidence”, so for a while it was just Ollie and Tangent, and if you’ve read my rants on Tangent you know that’s no good. I think that’s when Skelter came into the picture. He is a jackal boy who works for the squad and coincidentally befriended Ollie at Rouge’s bar, where they formed a really close friendship.

This is so funny to me, Skelter looks so dorky in the wrong ways xd He’s not changed significantly but his current messy hair fits him a lot better.

They were meant to have a confusing friendship from the beginning. They start off confusing their feelings of friendship for a crush, they realize it’s friendship so they settle for that happily, eventually they actually develop feelings for each other but that’s it’s own entry lol.

Funny how Tangen’t first Noir appearance was him threatening them. He was not meant to be an emotionally abusive parental figure to Ollie at first but I mean, if you’re willing to beat up your sister’s friend repeatedly you gotta have some major issues my guy.

I did mention Tangent’s concept goes further back due to me having a wolf character and a voice headcanon ready to go. Here’s an stylized version of Tangent before he had a purpose. Very tall scary wolf lad.

This are Tangent, Skelter and Ollie current design in height order. Including it bc I love this picture.

I find his first concept art cursed, tale this out of my sight he’s not allowed to look like this.

I guess Ollie and Tangent’s mom count as a character, but her appearance and exact personality is so vague it’s hard to say a lot about her. That woman might get a post of her own so I can outline my struggles in portraying her so that everyone can point and laugh at me like the little clown I am.

She’s always been vague and I think that might be the best option? She’s long gone by the time the curren storyline takes place and only lives in her children’s head.

I had an idea that came to me recently of what if each child sees wolf lady in a different light. I don’t think I went in depth in the Tangent entry but he sees a more idealized version of his mother, a version he’s become fond and protective over, a blurred face he’s keen on cherishing in his memory. Ollie on the other hand sees her as a scary black drippy shadow. She knows this person is supposed to be her mother, but all she all she can recall is her flaws and every single time she failed them when she could’ve easily not.

I will 100% repeat this in wolf lady’s entry.

lolol this is the closest i got to giving her a face BUT it was immediately scrapped. She’s meant to be vague and that’s that.

If you think I’m being vague in this post then you’re correct. I’m trying to keep my rants in manageable chunks to stay organized, that way I can focus on one topic and not branch out into multiple ones (otherwise I become incredibly overwhelmed). I’ll probably make a list on the topics I want to expand on later on so I don’t forget.
