This is the first Holby City fic ive done, and it came from a conversation i had with Ithilwenn as we discussed Penny Valentine's character, as we often do :)
A/N: i know im stupid and just told you who the character was, but the way i wrote it means you dont hear her name till the end of the next part. So it's written abit weirdly, not sure about, but please stick with it. Thank you!
Also, think this chapter might be a little short, idk.

Disclaimer: I dont own Holby City. Wish i did.
Summary: Spend to long in the system, you become the very thing you said you never would. And the worst thing, is that you accept it.
She'd been at Holby for years. Ever since she'd been an F1. People never usually stayed this long, but she'd grown used to the place. At first she'd wanted to leave, quit for good, that many bad things had happened to her here.
She'd literally made some of the stupid mistakes of her life on these corridors. Loved the wrong people, lost people. She had stopped trying to block the thoughts of those she had lost, when they came to her mind as she moved around the hospital. It was inevitable that she should think about them.
Not that you would ever know, of course. No. She always made sure no one would guess. On the outside, she made point of being confident and cool to the point where she was as cold as ice. No one saw past this, or saw the tugging feelings of sadness she felt.
Sighed to herself as she moved briskly. As an F1 she'd get bumped into ten times because no one noticed her. Now, they saw her coming and scurried to the side to let her past. She ignored them all. She had other things to think about. Because today, joy of joys, they were to receive a new group of F1's.
She glared at them Coldly. A huddle of them stood close together, nerves etched clearly onto their faces. At one time or another, she would have thought to be sympathetic, to relate to them. Not now. It would do no good to mother them.
Putting down the folders she had been holding, she crossed her arms.
"You are all stood..." She looked them each in the eye. "Far to close together." She said quietly. Though, she had enough presence in this place, that the whole ward probably fell silent for her to speak.
The F1's looked around at each other, totally confused. There was a little mumbling and shuffling as they took a few steps away from each other. She began to slowly pace in front of them. No one dared speak so far, and the heels of her shoes was almost the only sound.
"Does anyone know why I did that?" She asked, gazing at them expectantly.
There was silence still, until a girl with olive skin, long dark hair and square black glasses self consciously raised her hand.
"Yes. You."
"So you could get a better judgment of our individual tal-"
"No." She cut her off mid sentence. The girl immediately clamped her mouth shut and lapsed back into silence.
"It's because I wanted to show you, that there is no point in making friends."
She saw their eyes widen.
"By next month half you of will be gone. You wont be able to do it, to work here, and nobody will have any clue how on earth you got through medical school. The other half will quickly realize that friends will hold you back. Or, you will have to hold them back. If you have friends in here, your going to end up trampling all over them to get what you want."
Silence again. She understood why, really. They thought she was just trying to be scary and show them who was boss, and it was working. They would hate her for a little while after this. But in the end they would be grateful. She wished someone had told her all this on her first day.
Just then, she heard one of the F1's, a scruffy looking boy with his hand in his jean pockets, whisper to the girl next to him.
"They didn't teach us that in medical school."
She knew he was trying to be cocky, because of the smirk on his face when he said it. His longish hair looked like he'd never used a comb, and he wore no tie. Despite their obvious differences, the boy somehow reminded her of her brother. He had the same blue eyes. This unfairly made her more angry at him.
"No, they didn't." She snapped harshly. He blushed as he realized he'd been caught. "They teach you that at Holby."
He looked at her square in the eye.
"Didn't you have any friends?" The F1 raised an eyebrow at her.
She glared back, emotionless.
"I had a brother. And he is not my friend anymore. He is also not the director of surgery here. I am."
For a fleeting moment, the tough woman stood in front of them looked sad. But it was gone as quickly as it came. "Like i said." She murmured quietly, almost to herself. "Friends hold you back."
