A new entry (I think) to the World Wide Web: Godtube.
(Godtube... God in a tube!)
It's Youtube, except for Christians. Why Christians can't just use Youtube, I'm not sure. But anyway.
Here's the mission statement: "GodTube utilizes Web based technology to connect Christians for the purpose of encouraging and advancing the Gospel worldwide."
How does one, exactly, encourage the Gospel?
The Terms of Use prohibit posting anything that "is contrary to the evangelization of Jesus Christ and His teachings, or constitutes blasphemy, or is otherwise offensive to our online Christian community"
Does Jesus Christ really need to be evangelized?
More seriously - why do Christians seem so intent on creating their own versions of everything? T-Shirts, music, fiction, art, breathmints... really, what's up with that? Why don't we feel like we can simply traffic with everyone else? Why do we separate ourselves from a world that so desperately needs us to engage it?
Because, you say, because we Christians don't want to deal with the crap that's out there. Not every video on Youtube is "family-safe." That's how we advertise our music, after all, "safe for the whole family."
But, I say to you, aren't we taught how to choose what is right and good and healthy for us? To resist temptation? Shouldn't a mature Christian be able to post videos to Youtube without opening the crap that's inevitably going to be there? I can speak from personal experience here, but it'll sound like bragging: I have a YouTube account. I post videos there (the videos I use in this blog.) And, honestly, I've never felt tempted by anything I've seen there. More temptation comes in the junk mail, most days.
Here's what I am tempted to do: judge my brothers and sisters, my fellow Christians. I'm really tempted to mess with Godtube - to take the videos from there and post them on Youtube, or to complain about something "offensive" I found there - like a white depiction of Jesus, or some conservative "Bush is God's choice for President" nonsense I'm guessing I could find there with ease...but look, I'm already passing judgement. So I should get out of here.
And leave just a question:
Why do we need GodTube?
