Life is a Highway

"You have to be kidding me," Alex muttered, glancing at Zack with dark eyes.

Zack looked down at the floor ashamedly, afraid to meet the eyes of his band mates. Alex was the only one showing any anger, though. The other two just looked surprised and a little concerned. Alex had every right to be angry. After he and Lisa broke up, he had put his all into the band, and here Zack was, announcing a hiatus from the very band he had worked so hard on. A band that had finally started to take off.

"No," he muttered, keeping his eyes on the hands in his lap. "Not kidding. I have to do this."

Alex stormed off them, with a soft noise of disgust, leaving Zack with the silent two. It was odd to see them exchange expectant looks, silently begging the other to say something first, to relieve the tension. Usually they had to fight over talking period, since everyone always seemed to want to voice their opinions. Not now, apparently.

It was Rian who, eventually, did. "What are you going to do?"

"I don't know," Zack replied hopelessly, sighing and burying his face in his hands. "I want to... see the world. Or at least the country."

"But we could be seeing the world anyway!" Jack exclaimed, finally finding his voice.

"No," Zack replied, shaking his head slowly and glancing up at the other two. "I'll see it, but I won't experience it. I'm not ready to give that up yet."

They nodded solemnly, finally understanding what Zack wanted, maybe even needed. The three men sat there awkwardly, making even the couches, which Alex swore were made from clouds, look uncomfortable. It was more of an out-of-body experience for Zack, who hadn't had an awkward moment with his friends since they had become friends. It stayed silent, with a tense sort of feeling lingering in the air, until Jack stood up, muttering something about going to find Alex.

"You sure about this, man?" Rian asked, standing up as well.

"Not at all," he muttered. "But I think I need to do this.

Zack was throwing everything he could into his bags when he heard the door open behind him. He sensed, only slightly, but kept his back to the door as he made his way towards his dresser. It wasn't worth turning around, considering it was probably only his roommate, and Matt was honestly the last person he wanted to talk to right now.

"Where are you going to go?" another voice, not Matt's, asked him.

Zack turned around slowly, and shot him a curious look, silently asking him how he got in. Alex only nodded in response, and looked intent on receiving an answer to his own question. So Zack let the unspoken question fall to the floor, figuring that Matt either let him in or Alex knew where the spare key was (which wasn't unlikely). Zack shrugged and went back to packing.

"Everywhere," he replied lamely giving no indication that he was going to continue.

still in progress.
