Rikkai!High/The Girls Team: “Interlude: Vigilance”
Sometimes, she forgets that it’s over. That the past is in the past, and that things are better now, making everything else right in the world.
But there are nights like this, when Eiri tiptoes outside of her brother’s room and takes care to make little to no noise. Seiichi has always been such a light sleeper, and if he catches her creeping around in the dead of night, he will want to know why.
She pauses just steps from his door and presses her fisted hand to her chest because she is sure that the thump, thump, thump echoing in her ears will startle him awake. She just wants to check. This is what she tells herself. She just wants to make sure that her dream was just a dream, that her elder brother is safely tucked in his own bed, and that the days of him being gone and in the hospital are behind them.
She tucks her hair behind her ear and gently turns the knob of his door. When she peers in, her breath hitches and her blood runs cold at the sight of an empty bed.
“What’re you doing up?”
She barely manages to hold back the yelp of surprise that fights its way up her chest and out her throat, but when she turns she sees the dark figure, much too black against the shadows.
The light in the hall flicks on and Eiri blinks at the sudden blinding brightness.
“Why’re you creeping around in the dark?” Her brother asks again, his voice rough with sleepiness as he runs a hand through his hair.
“I could ask the same of you.” She huffs back, ducking under his arm and heading back to her room.
