Altar

by LDF

I dig and dig in the deep brown dirt
Sifting through clay and rock and earth
Trying desperately to find that gold-spark
Sweat in toil and labour
Sodden from my clamouring search
How I forget myself!
Dug in an earth-trench
Whist high-flung on a sun-brightened glory mountain
In my heady rush to build an altar
Have I so soon forgot that my temple is all the earth?
Deeper within, and unblemishable,
Forever enduring through light and shadow,
That is the temple
That is my home and thine
In the heart, in the star,
In the soul-well of endless chorus,
However stillness may mask,
My very being screams for you!
Teach me patience
Teach me first to be my first self
Lest I be dashed to the flinty stones
Lest I forget my own being
To be lost once more in confusion endless.
So I put down trowel
And breathe
And with confidence
Find you everywhere.
