. the sun is beaming warm on the grass and dirt and twigs and roots and look right there, right there an ant is crawling across the lawn.
. fairy flowers have invaded the treeline and just beyond in the thin spread of still-naked trees are the clusters of daffodils and clumps of thick grass and yellow star-shaped flowers with spotted leaves; and the sky is blue-white against the twisting black branch silhouettes when you tip your head back standing there in the flowers and sticks and last year's dead leaves.
. sister plucking daffodil petals to tie up in satchels to sit in her bedroom to make it smell fresh and outside and yellow.
. thick red-green stalks pushing up from their dead mothers, swelling tips promising palm-sized blooms of pink peony when april showers roll over into may sunshine.
. fairy flowers closing up in the deepening gloom until they are pink-white rice grains scattered across the grass.
. planting flower blossoms around the house, knowing they probably won't grow but praying they will, laying down in the green greenest patch of grass as the sky sags and threatens to burst with rain.
