1) Select 5-10 (or so) favorite books.
2) Post the first line from them. If there's a prologue, or some introductory text, use your judgment.
3) Don't mention the title or author. Duh. That's for everyone else to figure out.
4) It's not a bad idea, after someone correctly identifies the book, to update the original entry to reflect that fact.
I really want to see who is able to guess these for real, so please don't cheat and use Google or something. Merci beaucoup!
1. "I saw him for the first time at the funeral."
2. "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
3. "I can't believe I used to do this nearly every day."
4. "On a cold, fretful afternoon in early October, 1872, a hansom cab drew up outside the offices of Selby, Shipping Agents, in the financial heart of London, and a young girl got out and paid the driver."
5. "Apart from the one in the church tower, there were five clocks in the village that kept reasonable time, and my father owned one of them."
6. "I write this sitting in the kitchen sink."
7. "'That is my decision. We need not discuss it,' said the man at the desk."
8. "Lyra and her daemon moved through the darkening hall, taking care to keep to one side, out of sight of the kitchen."
[EDIT]The ones that are bold have been guessed correctly. Check the comments to see by whom![/EDIT]
