The lack of hair has increased my running speed.

I’m happy I did the big chop for a few reasons.

I talked to my Mom today and apparently I’ve getting my hair permed since I was two years old, and I have no memory of it ever being natural. I’m not mad at her or anything because my mother really knew how to take care of my hair and if anybody remembers my hair from Jr. High and prom night, that’s not as long as my hair can be. Those lengths were the end result of my Dad ruining my hair and we had to start the growth process all over again with braids. Hell, I had an afro when I was nine months old. Anyway, the point is that I’m really excited to see my natural hair. Plus, my mother told me that I had a really pretty curl pattern. Second, after listening to Raven-Symone talk about her hair and she will gladly talk about doing everything under the sun to her hair; I’ve realized that hair is only as big a deal as you make it. Hair is an accessory, to be put on and taken off as you please. And I mean that, I have wigs.

You know what I think is funny? Last Friday, my little brother Elijah implied that I should do something with my hair and less than four hours latter, I was in a barbershop shaving it all off. The second funnies thing was his response. He put his hand to his chest, stepped back and said, “No, oh my God.” I kept laughing because he was ‘taken aback’ so to speak by the decision. He that since our other brothers had shaved off their hair, he has a light fade and our mom has a teeny, weeny afro, I used to be the last of the Mohicans. Now, we’re just a family of bald people.

Anyway, today starts my new workout/eating regime designed in part by SparkPeople.com (whom I would recommend to anyone for free eating/working out advice and meal planning). One of the things I’m working on is changing my approach to working out. Before, I would set a goal of running for 30 minutes straight which was cool but surprisingly exhausting and dull. Now I’m running for distance which I think is better because the ultimate goal is 3 miles, regardless of speed. Fast or slow, if you have 20 minutes left on the clock then you have 20 minutes left on the clock. If you’re going for distance, then you can control how quickly you want finish the work out. So far I’ve managed to shave off five minutes.
