Home

Wash had to clench his hands to the arms of the chair to keep them from shaking from adrenaline. Breathing deeply, he realized he had never been so terrified in his life. Or more alive. He laughed nervously, a habit from his childhood. He wondered if the verse would be anything like what everybody said.

"You look like you're scared out of your gorram mind Wash. Chill out." Laughed the tall girl who was wearing a little too much lipstick on piloting the shuttle. "Jason ain't gonna ever find out we took out his shuttle for a little test drive. Besides, with you going into flight school and all, you better get used to this."

Wash chuckled a little, and tried to calm himself down. Remembering a song his mother used to sing sometimes, he hummed it to himself.

"Peaceful colors everywhere, purples and deep blues, feeling so at home here, Oh as if up here I grew."

"Hey! I know that song!"

"My mom used to sing it to me, Alyssa, long time ago. Only song I ever remember her singing. She always wanted to see the stars, always talked about going up one day. Never got to it though. Last thing she ever said to me before she died."

Wash sighed. Why was he even telling Alyssa this? Alyssa had been his friend since he was a kid, her family bought about half the factories in the city he lived in. She went to the same school as he did, well, pretty much the only school there was. Since both her and Wash were ridiculed by the other children, they naturally started to hang out together. Alyssa was never too serious about anything, never wanted to talk about anything actually important. She was way too immature for that. But she was taking him to see the stars. That had to be worth something.

It's so beautiful up her now, Oh I think I might just stay, all alone and by myself, So free and far away.

Wash gasped as he got his first view of the stars. He had never seen anything more beautiful in his life. This was what he was born to do. He was home. For the first time in his life, he felt like he was actually home. It felt good.
