I know this isn't really relevant to the community, but if you love Raul Esparza, you MUST see "Taboo." It's running on Broadway right now, and Raul is AMAZING in it. It's about Boy George's rise to fame in the early eighties and the gay club scene in London as a whole. Raul plays Philip Sallon, a close friend of Boy George and the narrator of the show, and his performance was easily one of the best I've seen all year.
It's not up on TKTS, but they ARE selling student tickets for half price. When I saw it this past weekend, I paid fifty bucks to sit in the centre of the seventh row, and it was more than worth it. Raul was crying real tears during one song--and that song had me sobbing. I've never cried that hard during any show before, but I was uncontrollable when he sang that song. If he doesn't win a Tony for this role, I'm going to be furious.
Even though it was a matinee, Raul came out of the stage door after the show and signed my playbill from the "Chess" concert he was in recently. He was so, so nice, and even had a conversation with me while writing a personal message to me on it instead of just signing his name. He had given an utterly draining performance and had to do it again in three hours, yet he still came out and took the time to see his fans.
I'm urging everyone I know to see "Taboo" because it's so amazing--it's better than "Tick, Tick, Boom," in all honesty--and it's in danger of closing in January after only running for a few months. They're actually losing money. I know the tickets are expensive, but they're really worth it. I don't live in New York, but I plan on seeing it as often as possible, even though I really can't afford to because I'm a poor college student. Please, please try to see this show! Raul gives so much in everything he does, and he deserves our support.
